I just wanted to throw out there that German Sheps. are the #1 breed of dogs that bite people, so the OP had every right to be scared of one who was GROWLING at him. There's a reason they are used for police work - they are powerful dogs! Shit, I would be scared too, and I own two (well-trained) German Shepherds..

Like all dogs, german shepards can be intimidating! But they can also be extremely loving dogs, so dont be too hard on their breed :]
