I would guess that it's because he's from the Netherlands. In German, you have the verbs studieren and lernen. You use studieren when you're talking about what your major is or where you go to school. You use lernen when you're talking about studying for a test. Because lernen looks like learn and studieren looks like study, it's pretty common for non-native speakers to use them incorrectly. Since Dutch is somewhere between German and English, I'm guessing they have the same kind of thing going on. (I realize this is probably more information than you really care to know, but I'm currently trying to put off studying for finals.)
