Today, I turned eighteen. Thinking I was going to get a big present from my parents on this special day, I eagerly unwrapped my present. They got me a bag of M and M's. Last year I got flannel bed sheets. FML

Okay, come on. I bet some of her friends got cars and computers and iPods for their birthdays. I understand she shouldn't feel 'entitled' to anything, but can no one understand the disappointment? She isn't homeless or living in poverty so her parents can probably afford to spend well.... over three dollars on a gift for her eighteenth birthday. Yeah, it's not the end of the world, but you know what? Half you are posting these messages criticizing the OP from your goddamn iPhones that mommy and daddy bought you. I don't care if you're 'happy getting nothing' (I don't believe it for the majority of you, though) for your birthdays, everyone has a right to be a little irked when zero thought and effort goes into a gift for their coming of age birthday. My family isn't rich but if we're struggling with funds we still put in some effort for gifts. I work a little extra in order to spend some money on gifts for my family, why shouldn't parents do the same for their kids? And don't give me the recession bullshit, because if that had been the issue in the OP's case I'm sure she would have understood or they would have at least explained it to her. No gift would have been better than a thoughtless one. A note saying, 'honey, we're sorry we can't afford much this year, etc etc. ' would have probably changed things in the OP's mind. Stop being hypocrites.

Okay people. I think I might need to get my eyes checked, because I didn't see ANYWHERE in the post where it said that she wanted a car. Let me check again... nope. Don't see it. I must be stupid, or retarded, or crazy or something. Maybe, the OP wants something more than a 30 cent bag of M&Ms, which clearly indicate no thought. I mean, a card costs 99 cents, something which most people CAN afford, and I take it if you can afford internet, you can afford to spend 99 cents for a very special birthday. Maybe she doesn't want something super expensive. Maybe she would have been happy with a burned CD of songs she liked with her family, or a 20 iTunes gift card with which she can enjoy songs for a while, or maybe even something as simple as a homemade card or necklace. But I trust that most of you, no matter WHAT you say, would be upset by a 30 cent bag of M&Ms, something which you pick up on the way home from the grocery store. So I think this is a FYL.

Selfishness exposed: "Thinking I was going to get a big present from my parents" - yes, OP DID expect something expensive. "They got me a bag of M&M's. Last year I got flannel bed sheets." - OP is whining about never having got anything they find up to par.

Alright, everyone who has had their birthday forgotten, sucks for you, I'm sorry your life sucks, etc. But all the people who are calling the OP an 'ungrateful bitch' are ******* ridiculous. She obviously has shitty parents who don't give a **** about her life. And to all the people saying that "at least she got something" it really doesn't make a difference. It just shows how little planning and thought went into her present. And all the people saying that "at least they provided food and shelter" suck too. Again, she has parents who obviously don't give a **** about her. It's her 18th birthday, and now she's and adult. She finally has freedom as a citizen, and her parents show their love by buying her a bag of candy? Seriously?

Okay, so her parents hate her and are shitty because they don't get her good enough presents? Makes tons of sense, no, really. They got her flannel sheets last year, sounds to me like they care about her BEING COLD. One can assume they buy practically (meaning, things she can use), instead of extravagantly, and so probably thought this was a real treat. OR, one can assume this is their way of saying she's an adult now, so she can get her own presents. Sounds dismissive and cruel, but how many of your parents get presents from THEIR presents on their birthdays?

hey DameGreyWulf "how many of your parents get presents from THEIR presents on their birthdays?" that totally makes sense!!

LMFAO Well... they certainly don't get presents from their presents either, so there! I meant parents. They don't get presents from their parents. Hahaha.

Hey everyone saying she's an ungrateful bitch, for your next birthday, I'm going to get you a pillow. Not a special one, just a plain white pillow. I'm not even going to buy it, it's just gonna be the one sitting on my bed now.

Sounds great, I need a new pillow. Plain white pillows can be decorated, too. So you've given me TWO presents: a pillow, and a craft project.

as much as i love m&m's, i would cry if that was the only thing i got for my birthday. it doesn't have anything to do with the price, but it takes no thought and was probably bought at the drugstore on the way home. and i'm sorry, but despite the recession, i think they probably could have spent a little more than a few bucks on a meaningless gift for you eighteenth birthday

even my parents would be disappointed if i got them that for their birthdays

God help you, if i dont receive the pillow I was promised!
