I think that law is very stupid and unfair. How can someone really defend themselves against someone pointing a gun at them? What, they're supposed to just stand there and get shot first, THEN lay there bloody waiting for ambulence to come, be on the news the next day which most likely the person with the gun will never get caught by the police.

This happened to me, I walked out of John Lewis after buying a ton of stuff in kitchenware. 20 seconds later one of those police community support officers asked to search my bag, saw the knife (in a box), then called in the real police, who then let me go.

Why is everyone assuming OP was just wandering around with the knife in her hand? chances are it was in a bag. Even if it wasn't in a bag most knives come in some sort of packaging which would show it was brand new. The cop in this case was a total moron.
