Today, I was at Target trying on swimsuits. I tried on a medium bottom and was so excited because it fit perfectly even though I've gained a few pounds. My self-esteem was at an all-time high until my mom told me I could never fit into a medium. I rechecked the tag. It was an extra large. FML

you should sit on your mom, that should teach her a lesson.

The size on the tag doesn't matter as long as the clothes fit well and you feel comfortable with the way you look.

145 it can be the same size as your underwear, but I find cotton underwear is softer and a bit more stretchy that the material bikinis are made of so you sometimes need a different size. But it would also depend on the style and material of the underwear or bikini

OP don't let your size dictate your happiness :) if you are happy with how you look then be happy, if you aren't, then change it. To everyone else yelling about how fat girls shouldn't wear bikinis? How about me? I'm a UK size 12 (American size 8) and I carry a few extra pounds- on my chest. I'm a 32H bra size. Despite the fact I have a slim waist, and my arse is all right, as far as you're concerned I obviously shouldn't wear a bikini because I have those extra pounds. Everyone is differently proportioned. For all you know the OP has a brilliant hourglass figure- which also means larger hips and bottom as well as breasts. And even if she doesn't have an hourglass figure? Screw that. Wear what you want people and be happy. There's no rules concerning clothes. As far as I'm concerned, the only thing really fat people shouldn't wear is short skirts with no knickers. But then I don't think anyone should lol

#91, you made my day haha!! thank you for saying that

Fyi: If you went from Medium to Extra Large, you didn't gain just "a few" pounds. Really, get your head out of the fridge and stop eating like a pig.

hahahah wow that is an FML. I just hope you get to gym to burn if off now.

167, see no one would complain if a woman had a large chest, people only seem to be offended if the weight is somewhere else, it's silly.

What #30 and #35 said. :) Sometimes people, even the ones closest to you, have very low self-esteems and push their own insecurities on you. If it fit you, she should have just let you be happy, regardless of the size, instead of pointing it out so rudely. Buying swimsuits is already difficult enough for some girls! Of course you want opinions and help, but not that type of criticism about how fat you look or what size you're buying... especially from your mother, of all people! As if we don't have enough insecurities! And you never know, she may have even been a little jealous and bitter, especially if she isn't exactly a model, herself. She could be going through a mid-life crisis and be feeling old, fat, and ugly, and want to take it out you, who she wishes she could be. Not to trash anyone's mom, but sadly, I've seen it happen before. She probably didn't even realize the damage her words did. Plus, what I've noticed lately is that the generation gap between teens/younger women and their mothers is extremely evident when it comes to opinions on bodies and clothes. A lot of moms (but not all, of course) seem to think that the perfect body is a skinny body, and that's the only way to be healthy and beautiful. What they cant understand is that "skinny" isn't always better or more desired today, and that a lot of girls actually crave a curvier shape now. Plus, there are plenty of guys out there that like a bigger booty too, so be happy to have one. =) Some girls have none at all and wish that they had what you have! We're all different and unique. Don't worry about it. I'm sure that you look great in it! As long as YOU like it and YOU feel good, that's what really matters. You know what's best for yourself. Just worry about being happy and healthy... the beauty will follow and always be there. Love yourself as you are. God Bless.
