Although the OP is a bit of an idiot, so are some of you people. Hearing someone spell something aloud is a lot different from reading something. Just because the OP's brain couldn't process his/her parents' spelling doesn't mean he/she can't read. It takes a bit longer to process if something's being spelled out loud, especially if it's being spoken quickly. However, it sucks that your parents actually knew your comprehension was that bad.

ugh! look, it's a lot different when you are reading words spelled out than hearing them. When you read, you can still see the letters before and after the letter your eyes are focusing on. Also, as you get used to reading, you start to recognize what certain words look like, so you don't have to spell them out letter by letter. By saying them outloud, you have to visualize that letter, remember all the letters they said before that letter, and figure out when that word ends and the next begins. It is also a lot easier to spell words out than to make letters into words. I guess the FYL depends on if the parents were spelling out their entire conversations or if they were just spelling the key words. And anyways, how unpleasant of them! They can't wait until they're alone to have "grown-up" conversations? Sit down and enjoy your families for once people!

To be fair, if they are spelling the words out, the OP probably couldn't distinguish when words start and end and if they're doing it for every single word it'd be easy for the OP to get confused. Not an FML, and gtfo, "dumbass" criers.

If you couldn't understand what they were saying because they spelled out the words, how did you manage to spell all the words in your "FML" right? Seems suspiciously fake to me.
