Today, I was grounded for not agreeing with an article on dating my mom found in a very strict magazine. The article told parents to monitor phone calls, make rumors about their children cheating on people and not allow their children anywhere but home. FML

What magazine was this, Serial Killer Raising Digest?

Unfortunately, most parents can't control their kids and resort to what we all know and love. By that, I mean extreme authoritarianism.

Actually, I (OP) am not Mormon, nor am I from Utah. (FML added that for some reason)

I'm guessing you murdered your mother. Kudos. Breathe the free air again.

op I'm sorry ur mom is like that. my dad threatened me when I told him I wanted to go to college and thus kicked me out. I've been on my own 4 years now and Ive made it. I feel ur pain :/

Out of idle curiosity, what was the article and magazine?

I'm not sure of the magazine name, but it was something reader-submitted to Focus on the Family.

Personally, I would tell my mother that if she followed that advice, she had best get used to a few facts: 1.) At age 18, I would move out - period. Even if this meant becoming homeless and living on the street. 2.) If I ever had any children, she would never be allowed any contact with them. There is such a thing as Parental Rights - but there is NOTHING in the law about Grandparental Rights. They do not exist. 3.) As your child, I am happy to learn my values from you and follow your example. If spreading rumors and lies is a value that you wish to pass on to me, then I am happy to start doing so. Just don't complain if the rumors and lies are about you. I am an adult and any parent that would employ those tactics is crossing the lines into mental and emotional abuse. There *are* laws on the books which allow for children to sue for emancipation from their parents. If you have a parent who is willing to abuse you in this manner, perhaps you should talk to a school counselor about it and maybe even Social Services. You can also contact a lawyer about how to go about getting Emancipation.
