At least you reacted quickly instead of just ignoring it.
You did good though
To everyone saying "Oh you did the right thing, call the fire department next time.". The fire department is not here to change peoples batteries. That's a waste of their time and resources. Test your detectors monthly and learn how they work. Seriously, you're grown ass adults.
It happened to me once and I started freaking out. I have 3 dogs so I couldn't run and I ended up ripping out the batteries cause it was broken
I don't know...why don't you call the FD
I put FYL, because it's better to be safe than sorry. I remember a few years back, here in Australia there were some kids found dead in their home and of course everyone instantly blamed the parents. Turned out they'd died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Now the parents are big spokespeople for carbon monoxide poisoning and the detectors. Also, I know what it's like for it to beep like that. My smoke detector died once, and constantly beeped all night and all day. We ended up smashing it off the roof with a baseball bat and just replacing it, because it wouldn't take new batteries.
so if this would have been an actual fire you' d just go out and watch your house burn down? YDI
Am I the only one who thinks OP is a moron?

For me, I'm the exact opposite. If my detector starts beeping, I'll replace the batteries first before doing anything else. That might be the death of me one day. I also bought detectors that say "Fire" or "carbon monoxide" instead of just beeping, so I actually know when the detector's actually trying to save my life.
