Good luck getting assault charges to stick; the child is 10 - in Australia, children below 10 cannot be charged with a criminal offence and children below 14 are assumed to be incapable of committing a crime until you can prove otherwise. That case is almost certainly destined to fail. As for suing for negligence, you were in charge of the child at the time, so that's probably going to be at least contributory negligence on your part. Doubt you would get enough to make it worth your while.
in several countries, someone under the age of 10 is legally presumed to be incapable of fully understanding the difference; obviously maturity varies from person to person, and the law attempts to set guidelines that work for most. With regard to contributory negligence, the parents are responsible for their child's character: it would only be negligence on OP's part if the Mother had warned them that the child was likely to be violent.
A nine year old who committed deliberate murder (ie intended to kill, without a reason such as self-defence or provocation) would almost certainly be placed in custody - probably a secure psychiatric unit. They might not be formally charged, but that would not mean that they got away with it.
Wait how did the kid knock you out? Did he swing at you? Damn that kid has dynamite in his hands if he did
Uhhh, close minded mothers are almost as bad as Donald trump
Kids can be crazy sometimes, I babysit once in a while as well and they are very strong sometimes even if they dont look like it.
Go to the hospital and file assault charges.

I hope you went straight to hospital to get checked out and right after that to police and filed an assault charge. Being blacked out for any amount of time is a serious health issue and a concussion and headache would be the least of your worries. As harsh as it sounds, if the kid doesn't learn what consequences are, he is going to kill someone before he's a teen.
You lost your job? Did the mom not give you any time to explain..? (I think I already know the answer)
