This explains something that happened when I was a kid. We had a hamster named Chippy whose cage was on a bench, about two feet above the ground. Our dog, Pooky, strolled by and stopped to take a look at Chippy, who was, as expected, taking a jog on his hamster wheel. Pooky seemed innocent enough-- just a curious dog taking a look at a hamster on a hamster wheel. Chippy noticed Pooky and got off of his hamster wheel and stood up on his hind legs at the front of the cage, looking at Pooky. After a moment of quiet inquiry -- no barking or growling -- Pooky wandered away. It seemed as though they had shared a moment of communion. Apparently not. Pooky scared the living hell out of Chippy, who remained frozen in the same position, up on his hind legs, looking out of his cage, for another half an hour. Then he dropped dead. My mom said small animals are prone to heart attacks, but I still never understood why that happened. Sorry about your friend's hamster, but, thanks for explaining why Chippy died. I had no idea dogs could eat hamsters. Until now.
