two wrongs don't make a right. you should not have been speeding and the other person should not have been tailgating
Uhm, dumbass much? If you were in such a hurry you should have left earlier so you wouldn't have to speed. I'm sure a ticket would have been better then a five car pile up anyway, idiot.
I don't think the "tailgating" rule should 100% apply on highways, personally. Even if the car is 50 feet in front of you, if they slam on their brakes, you're probably not going to have time to stop. The reaction time will get you. Don't assume you can quickly change lanes either if its rush hour. Big rigs can take up to a quarter mile to stop. Should they leave a quarter mile gap between them and everyone else? And to all you preaching about tailgating --- how much distance do YOU allow on the highway, and how many times have you suddenly changed lanes, automatically making the person behind you a tailgater? Don't use the hand brake in your car. It is designed to counteract static energy (parked on a hill), not kinetic energy (driving situations). Also, the fact that it doesn't activate the brake lights is a BAD thing on the road.
There's a trick or 2 to know on the highway: A: Go with the flow. Cops are less likely to pick you for speeding if you're at the speed of the rest of them. Obviously, OP was going too fast. B: Gently lift the E-brake (while depressing the latch) to slow faster if you need more than coasting can get. This prevents your brake lights from illuminating, and will keep the nose of the car from dipping down. Or, alternatively, wrap your car around the nearest tree, cause you obviously can't drive.
even if it was a police car you didn't need to slam on your breaks, only slow down. ydi for being a bad driver.
....this FML was posted a few weeks ago. WTF?
YDI for speeding.
The good news is, the person who hit you is still in the wrong, the bad news is now you got a mashed up car.
