The only way to win is to do what you think is right and not worry about those who share a different view.
So before the conversation you had about chivalry, you wouldn't have held open the door if it was a guy? Rude. How about treating every one equal, aka don't do something or say something JUST because they're a woman, or just because they're a man. Try some manners instead of worrying about what to do around woman specifically, seriously who doesn't hold open a door for someone that's right behind them? It's common courtesy!
Some people are weird. Just like sometimes when you try to let a car go first, they refuse to. It has nothing to do with gender. People need to stop being so focused on gender. What if he was staring at her chest? We don't know. Plus, chivalry should be applied to both sexes, not just men.
