Today, I was waitressing for a huge family. Their bill was $750. Excited about the tip, I was shocked to see only $0.50. As they were leaving, I threw the two whole quarters at their heads. Guess who also got fired today. FML

they probably should've left a better tip, but at the same time you can't throw quarters at a customers head and not expect to be fired.

For them to leave only 50 cents it was clearly as an insult to the waitress imo.

In the USA servers only get $3.00 a hour?!? That's ******* brutal. In Canada we get $8.90 + tips. Shit even my busboy gets $10.00.

it's $2.13/ hour in a lot of states. this just covers your taxes and paychecks usually equal $0. you also tip out bartenders and server assistants.

You're an asshole OP. No need to assault them. ****.

Why did you not gratuitize them??? Automatic 18%

If I'll ever visit US I'd never tip. all over the world you earn money. that your employer pays you. and tips are optional. besides, if they already spent that much money why would you think they would spent even more on you?

199, then don't eat out. If you don't like the system, don't participate at all.

I thought if the bill was over a certain amount or there was a big party/family 18% is automatically added. At least in every place I went too. FYL OP.

As a former waitress, I am on your side op. that is ridiculous considering waitresses make less than three bucks an hour. However on that large of a bill/family I would have added gratuity just in case.

Yeah that doesn't happen. You don't make tips, oh well. And most restaurants add gratuity on parties of 8 or more, which I'm assuming on a 750 dollar bill, there was more than that.

73 - You should be ashamed, without a waiter even having to ask you, if you cut into someone's livelihood by not tipping properly. You say you are just a few paychecks away from broke? Here's some news for you: don't eat out if you can't afford the service! Go to somewhere your wallet can afford, like McDonalds, where you don't need to tip. If you can't afford to tip you really shouldn't be spending your money on expensive restaurant food.

So poorer people shouldn't eat out because they might not be able to afford OPTIONAL tipping? They're the people who might only be able to go out to a restaurant once a month (if even that), and you're saying they don't even deserve that? What kind of backwards-ass logic is that? If a waiter or waitress is dependent on tips to earn minimum wage, that's not the customers' fault. That's the fault of their BOSS. Their boss should pay them minimum wage. It's ILLEGAL to make your employees work for less than minimum wage. Tips are optional, and if a waiter/waitress isn't earning enough in tips, then it is the LEGAL obligation of the boss to pay the difference.

219: No, they shouldn't eat out. If you don't like the system, don't participate at all.

I can't help but feel like you deserved it. A big family? You seem like the type that gets frustrated easily ( judging by your story)..unfortunately tipping is optional so always treat your customers with the utmost respect and attention. They probably gave you two quarters as a sign of your service.

To everyone complaining about how servers make less than minimum wage: federal labor law requires employers to make up the difference if a server's wage + tips doesn't equal minimum wage. Therefore, nobody should be pressured to tip based on the misconception the server won't make minimum wage if they do not. To servers: if you make less than minimum wage and your employer doesn't cover the difference then you should take it up with the labor board because they're breaking the law. It's not a customer's duty to pay you more than they feel you deserve just because your boss is breaking federal law.
