Today, I went on a date with a cute guy I met at a bookstore. He stood up and said he was leaving when I said that I didn't like 50 Shades of Grey, because he, "doesn't want to be near a bitch who doesn't know her place". He then told me to give him a ride home. FML

Today, I’m stuck on a date with a man who got ready by washing his car instead of showering, is proud to never read newspapers because “they lie”, and thinks racist jokes count as witty conversation. I’d have left already but he drove me, there’s no bus stop nearby, and no Ubers in the area. FML

As someone who has the displeasure of reading the book series for study, I found Christian Grey's character to be emotionally abusive and disgustingly manipulative. How do I know what I'm talking about? a) I've been in emotionally abusive relationships; b) I've been in a D/s relationship as a submissive; and c) I've been playing both personally and professionally as a Femdom in the BDSM community for the past 6 years of my life. I see no problem with people reading the books or seeing the movie for their personal entertainment- but for either a Dom(me) or sub to use it as a learning guide is frankly dangerous. While BDSM is based on being safe, sane, and consensual; Fifty Shades of Grey takes sane and safe out of the equation which leaves the consent aspect questionable. You simply don't emotionally manipulate someone into sexual submission. A submissive who truly wants to submit will be more than willing to for a responsible Master or Mistress. They don't need to be unhealthily coerced into it or introduced to it.
