American customs are stupid.
Garry24 -- you may wish to actually look into the federal minimum wage laws. If people are *only* getting paid $2/hour and not making up the difference in tips, then the employer is violating federal law. The 'server' minimum wage only applies when the minimum wage is obtained through tips.
there are plenty of minimum wage jobs that dont get tips. its freaking ridiculous to expect customers to pay extra on top of their bill, just because they make minimum wage. its a stupid american custom. do you tip the people who help you in retail stores? how about the dishwashers at said restaurant? no, you dont. its a ridiculous tradition that needs to go.
server minimum wage is different that retail and kitchen worker minimun wage. servers make between 2 and 3 dollars wage wise, then tips on top of that. most of the wages are taken out for taxes, making tips their only payment. work in a restaurant. youll understand the minute you get cheated on a table.
Samhat -- once again, you are wrong on many levels. There is no way you are having 2-3$/hour withheld for taxes, unless you *requested* that much be withheld. Besides, you would get most of that back in a refund anyway, since you are vastly overpaying your taxes. Secondly, federal law states that servers must make more than that *no matter what*. Since you insist on repeating your false information, here is a link to the department of labour on the subject:http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/q-a.htm At that link, you will find this: == An employer may pay a tipped employee not less than $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equal at least the federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Some states have minimum wage laws specific to tipped employees. When an employee is subject to both the federal and state wage laws, the employee is entitled to the provisions of each law which provide the greater benefits. == As you can see, if you do not make $5.85/hour ($6.55/hour July 24) (or more in states with a higher minimum wage) between the wages you are paid and your tips, your employer is *required by law* to make up the difference. You may think you know everything because you are a waiter -- but on this case, the federal government says you are flat out wrong. //I knew my second BS in Econ would come in handy. Just never thought it would be knocking the stuffing out of a snot-nosed punk on FML.com
"//I knew my second BS in Econ would come in handy. Just never thought it would be knocking the stuffing out of a snot-nosed punk on FML.com" This is relevant... how? I wouldn't say you 'knocked the stuffing' out of him. You just corrected him in a mildly pissed-off fashion.
Ozymandias FTW!! I just explained that law to some other idiot in the thread with the waitress getting stiffed by a party of 13 because of either her service being bad, or they were just being dicks like the OP. Yea OP you're a dick, who goes to a restaurant that they can't afford? Stop trying to fake the funk and just eat at places well within your means. If you want to splurge every now and then that's fine. Just make sure you can foot the bill first. If you were joking though, FYL :D
Ozymandias, I understand what you're saying, but you have several accounts on here (and many more anywhere you go) that are showing you that that's just not happening. If you want to talk legal issues and making sure they're being followed through with, then take it to a higher level--don't take it out on the individuals who are being cheated and are trying to make a living despite being possibly duped by the law and/or their employers.
Meaning a dine and dash right?
FYL and FYSL (Your Son's)! You're an asswipe for taking your family to a restaurant you can't afford. You're a douche for not knowing how to whisper. You're a pathetic failure of a parent for teaching your kids that. Remember this when the he calls from jail for stealing a car that was 'to expensive to pay for'.
YDI for trying to chew and screw
Waitresses should all go out and sell themselves. They'd get more money
YDI, you worthless ****.
You're a parent? F your son's life.

YDI for even thinking about "chewing and screwing!" you do realize that the waitress busts her ass to serve pricks like you and that her entire income is from your tip, right? waitresses get paid like, $2 and hour. I HATES people like you when i waitressed, who thought they were entitled to everything but didn't have to pay.
When around kids, never say anything that you don't want repeating!!! Learn for next time
