Today, I went out to a nice restaurant with my extended family. It was expensive, and when the bill came, I whispered to my brother, "We may need to make this one a Chew and Screw". When the waitress came back to the table, my five year old son decided to ask aloud "What's Chew and Screw?". FML

YDI for even thinking about "chewing and screwing!" you do realize that the waitress busts her ass to serve pricks like you and that her entire income is from your tip, right? waitresses get paid like, $2 and hour. I HATES people like you when i waitressed, who thought they were entitled to everything but didn't have to pay.

When around kids, never say anything that you don't want repeating!!! Learn for next time

And the United States wonders where all its financial problems came from. It's from morons like you, who try to get things they haven't earned. If you didn't realize how much it would cost, you're an idiot. They have prices next to every item. If you're stupid enough to order more than you can afford, I feel terrible for that 5-year old son that'll have your awful example as a parent. YDI for being a jackass. The only time I can see stealing having any justification is if you were literally starving to death and stole so you could live. But lemme guess, you're a member of the "obese americans" club too?

Your poor kid. Having an idiot like you for a parent.

I don't want to start a debate with anyone, but I'm just giving my opinion with my experience as a server. I've waited tables for 4 years in Louisiana to pay my way through college (and probably about 85% of servers I worked with were doing this). We only get paid $2.13/hr. Now anytime we got a paycheck the $2.13 went straight to taxes since we got to keep all of our cash/credit card tips at the end of each shift. So the tips were our only source of income (which I'm fine with because on average it comes out to be about $8-10/hr, work 5 hours, make $50-80.) Now I'm not sure about all restaurants, but the ones I worked at, the servers had to tip out 3% of their tips to hostesses, bartenders, and bus boys. So if someone tipped me 18%, I actually only recieved 15%. With that said, if someone didn't tip me enough....say $5 on a $70 bill, I actually PAID partly for that person to eat. Reason being, I had to tip out that 3% so I'm losing money if I don't get tipped enough. And I honestly just think some people are ignorant (not saying that in a bad way, but they just don't know) and don't realize that you are supposed to tip a certain percentage of your bill, not just $5 on everything no matter how expensive. Now, if you have the money to go out to eat, you should have the money to tip the server at least 15% on most occasions. When in reality 18-20% is now the standard because of inflation. Maybe 10-15 years ago 15% was the standard....not anymore, ask any server. Now, I know there are servers out there that don't do a great job, and don't deserve that much, that's fine. Complain to a manager so they can fix it, but don't ever "dine and dash", like most people have said already, it's illegal. And if you think about it, if servers did get paid an hourly minimum wage, do you know how much the price of the food items would go up. We have, on average, 18-20 servers on the floor at night, who all are making $2.13. If we were making minimum wage, that's at least $80 more an hour or at LEAST $400 more a night that the company would have to pay in labor, (That's just ONE shift, not even an entire day) so guess what...the prices on the menu would increase, and you would be paying more than you would if you just tipped 20%. I honestly think there are jobs everyone should work at least once in their life....retail, fast food, and DEFINITELY waiting tables. Everyone would be so much more considerate.

YDI for two reasons: -you take your family to a restaurant and NOT expect ur bill to be expensive? -for saying that in front of your kid (regardless if you whispered it) what kind of things are you teaching you child?

I chase down people who dine and dash. If you did that in my restaurant you'd end up with your ass in jail.

its dine and dash.... chew and screw sounds like you would have sex with the waitress

YDI for not expecting a nice restaurant to be really expensive

It's funny the only people that don't agree are those whom have never been a server. Serving is much harder and stressful than it seems !

A little info for all of you people about your servers: I'm a server here in southern CA and I hardly make enough money to cover my rent and bills WITH tips and $8.00 hourly. The reason we get paid that much is because of the cost of living here. When I lived in Delaware, servers only made $2.66 an hour and tips too, so unless you're working a fine dining restaurant somewhere, it doesn't come out to that much - even then, you're dealing mostly with rich bitches and snobs. Getting a serving job is a highly coveted position and you usually have to work your way up to being one. Once you do, you bust your ass dealing with tons of people who fail to look around and see that we're usually juggling 5 or 6 tables who are all needing something and usually being quite rude about having to wait 2 minutes for their refills or check or whatever. The reason we get paid hourly and with tips is because our job is about taking SHIT from grumpy, hungry people who think our job is to be their slave and "snap to it." Usually we are never thanked or asked politely for anything. I'd like to see everyone work in a restaurant for a week and not lose their shit with a guest, from stress, or with shittalking coworkers. Lastly: Please don't screw your server, most of us are single moms and/or college students trying to pay their way through school. We also usually have to tip out a good amount (usually 20% of what we make) of what WE work for to our bartenders, expos (people who prepare the food to go out once it's come out of the kitchen), and bussers. After hearing about all of that, if you still don't feel like tipping someone who is on their feet for hours at a time, stressed the **** out, and trying to be polite to total selfinvolved dicks, PLEASE GO TO MCDONALDS! /endrant OP, YDI.. no explanation needed

What?....On what planet is being a server a highly coveted position that one must fight their way up the ranks to achieve? On planet earth you fill out a damn application and check the server box to indicate what type of job you're applying for. And what do you mean people think its your job to "snap to it" when they ask for something? You're a damn 'server' it is in fact your job to "snap to it". I'm not saying run or anything like that, but if you want to be a good server you sure as hell better do things in a quick and timely manner. Maybe you should look into a different line of work since you apparently can't keep your composure while working a service job and seem to not know what your job description is. For most people, the size of your tip relies heavily on how well you serve them. You're not given a tip just because you want one, you have to earn it.

#141- What comment 139 was saying is that within a restaurant, being a server is what you want. Kitchen staff are either immigrants or culinary trained professionals (depending on the restaurant), and bussers / expo people don't make as much money. Servers make the most money on the average day while being out of the kitchen and usually offers flexible hours. As for tipping, you should consider 18% the average tip, 20%+ for good servers, and 10% for bad ones. Sure, their job is to serve you, but remember that with this bad economy, a lot of restaurants are cutting down on their staff, putting more strain on the servers. If you want to see what it's like, I suggest getting a job in a restaurant. Otherwise, just shut up.

igloo you can't be that dumb. You do realize in American restaurants you actually have the option to pick what you want to be right? If they don't want you for that particular job then you don't get hired. Servers are 'not' coveted positions. Why in the hell would a 'trained' culinary professional want to be a server? He/she trained specifically for the sole purpose of working in a kitchen. Stop trying to sound smart and talking out your ass. Chefs are definitely amongst the higher payed employees in a restaurant. Especially if you're the Head Chef. The Executive Chef is the only one close to a server's salary. It's nice to know that you tip people for doing their job poorly. What kind of backward ass logic is that? I'm sorry, but I don't reward incompetence. Yea, its a bad economy, what of it? Everybody (barring the rich and wealthy) is struggling just as much as the next man/woman. Servers get no special treatment. How about the lazy ones get some damn work ethic and 'earn' their tip. If it was mandatory to provide a tip then they'd have no incentive to actually give good service. Like I said, I will not reward incompetence.

"Yea, it's a bad economy, what of it?" is an thoroughly ignorant statement if you want to debate whether or not being a server is a 'coveted' position or not. There are graduates from the top schools in the country and business people who worked in high position jobs at some of the biggest companies that are right now looking for any job they can get, so you better bet that even a server job would be a relief for them! Sure, people have the option to choose what they want to do normally, but some people are smarter than to be picky in a time like this, when they've got hundreds lined up behind them to take the job without question.

Proudtobeme what the hell are you talking about? Are you comprehending what I'm saying or just making your own interpretation of it? It's not an ignorant statement at all. It's one that laymen's terms says "no shit sherlock, stop making excuses and trying to gain sympathy from people that are in the same boat as you are". This is why you should read the full statement instead of select parts of it. People that high up in their companies either A) didn't get fired B) have so much money saved up that unemployment doesn't phase them or C) have so many connections that they can get another blue-collar job without much effort. Are you really that naive to believe that someone of that caliber would be so desperate for work that they'd take a serving job, one of the lowest paying jobs in the country? That wouldn't even pay 1/4 of their house note. You must be one of those delusional people that doesn't understand how the world really works. People with actual job skills qualify for much higher paying jobs than a server.....i.e. they have what we call "options". Please don't say stupid things, it pains me.

As for serving tables being a coveted position, I merely meant that the position is coveted within a restaurant. It's usually hard to get hired as a server right away if you don't have any experience waiting tables. If you're not trying to be a cook or chef, serving or bartending are the best ways to make money in a restaurant and usually you must work your way up to being in that position. Usually people serving tables are people trying to bring in extra income to support their families and/or pay their way through school so they can move up in the business world and not deal with waiting tables. Also, I am completely aware that a tip is entirely voluntary for a guest to leave and it is earned by getting things to you correctly and in a timely manner. That's why we work hard to try to insure a tip from our tables and we do try to hurry to get things to you, but just as you said, we shouldn't have to RUN to make someone consider their experience good enough to tip. I wasn't trying to offend anyone, just inform. Serving is not rocket science by any means, but there can be stress just like in any other service job and when you're dealing with angry people it can be pretty brutal. All I was attempting to do with my comment was give some information about servers "behind the scenes" - I think that if more people understood the work we put into making your dining experience a success along with several other tables simultaneously, tipping would be an easier thing for a lot of people to understand and feel good about doing.

Oh ok thats fine, I thought you were one of those people that felt like they should automatically receive tips just because. If you felt I came at you too strong about that issue I do apologize. It just agitates me when servers think they should be tipped despite their attitude towards their job. Don't get me wrong, I give credit were credit is due and I don't expect spectacular service every time either. I just look for good decent service. Hell I actually look for reasons to give a higher tip than usual, but some servers are just horrible. Those are the ones I give a severely decreased or no tip to. I give passes on busy nights, I can understand those nights are hard. Its good that we can see eye to eye on that. Its nice to know that you realize that being a server should be a supplemental form of income. If you're not by yourself, making it your one and only form of income would be a tad foolish. Oh and my other two posts were directed solely at the two other people. I didn't lump your possible view points in with theirs. You said what you had to say initially and that would've been ignorant of me to assume you shared their views without you actually saying you did. The whole coveted thing.......yea that may not have been the best choice of words. Thanks for further elaborating on that :)

Holy hell! You guys are effing dicks. Maybe the man was just joking around. Why would anyone ever want to even post on FMl.com when everyone just gives them completely negative comments and treats them like shit? Go play in traffic you assholes.
