To everyone who is arguing that a blood test can tell how far along you are, it is flat out untrue. I am an OB/gyn and can promise you it can not be done. BHCG levels peak and plateaus between 10-12wks and prior to that are extremely variable. A blood test for pregnancy, or Beta HCG, is used in situations when a urine test is negative (rarely someone has a slightly different structure to their BHCG that is not recognized by urine tests), or it is used to help determine if the pregnancy is progressing normally and that is almost always used as a series of draws to see the trend (during the early stages of pregnancy we expect the number to double every 48 hours on average). Abnormal trends may lead us to believe that the pregnancy is abnormal (ie ectopic pregnancy or abnormal pregnancy likely to end in miscarriage). Dating is determined by a last menstrual period (if the patient is sure of her LMP and has regular cycles), or by ultrasound. That's it!
Um...what about by abdominal palpation and sf height? That's also pretty important at determining dates if done early...
Fundal height, performed through abdominal palpation is usually not done until 20weeks. The uterus doesn't come out of the pelvis until after 12 weeks so that wouldn't be helpful prior. Even then fundal height is still very subjective and most clinicians will still compare dates to an ultrasound even if that ultrasound is the 20-22wk anatomy scan.
Ultrasound should, in theory, only be confirmatory. I get what you are saying, but by bimanual palpation and abdominal palpation, a good clinician can easily determine gestation after 14 or so weeks. Everything in medicine is subjective - including ultrasonography ;) I'm so glad I learned medicine in a country where our diagnoses are made based on history and examination, and only confirmed by special investigations...
Ah I really do miss the good doctors and comforting nurses.
Don't
Seems that nurses around the world just want to cause pain. I refuse to have blood tests done for that reason
In a country where you can get sued for dumb trivial shit how does this go without at least an apology and a cake ??
How did she even get the job ?!?
Keywords
Uh make sure you don't get her tomorrow again XD
That must be "bloody" painful.
