J.K. Rowling combined all sorts of information from myths and folklore and other places to create the magical world of Harry Potter. So, she didn't exactly make all of it up but rather adapted it to her needs, as (I hope) would any writer. Her imagination created the characters, the histories, and so on, and it did a good job of it, too. With that said, I subscribe to the belief that some written stories are actually histories of an alternate world, bound (and thus inaccurately conveyed) by the perceptions of a writer or two. It's a silly little thought, but I am a writer also, and know how real my stories feel sometimes.
Muggle
