I can name most states and their capital cities in the US and I don't even live there. Yet most people in America can't even locate Canada on a map let alone know where it is.

I don't know if I agree with that. I think most (many?) people CAN actually locate Canada on a map, though they may not know the names of all the provinces (I only know Ontario, Toronto, Quebec, and Montreal, from memory)

I am going to point something out and not everyone is going to like it....... They recently did a study of the top education around the world. Out of 74 countries the US was ranked 23 for math and science and 17 for reading. The top 3 countries were South Korea, Finland and Canada. (They interchange with each other and Canada dropped in the math department down to 7) So in all honesty the guy who thinks Canada on located in the Southern Hemisphere was at a disadvantage. Maybe we need to start enforcing the completion of at least high school? (This goes for everywhere in 1st world countries)
