Today, my boss of six months asked me what country I'm from. I'm white and from the southern United States. I'm so quiet, he didn't think I spoke English. FML

Op here. I was just trying to say that there are no obvious signs that I'm not from Georgia/from another country, where most people speak English.

Even if you are extremely shy/quiet, your boss should know what language you speak by now... It's not your fault they've paid absolutely no attention!

Just keep going with it and act like you don't speak English to get out of messy situations

Or you could crank up your existing accent to full "southern belle" levels...of course, any brogue/drawl thick enough is unintelligible to anyone without a similar one. I'm with those above, have FUN with this!

If Americans struggle to understand other Americans, as I'm learning from these comments, I guess I should no longer be surprised that most I meet not only cannot pick my Aussie accent, but also cannot understand half of what I'm saying. I can easily understand the Southern accent, but that's perhaps because my guy is from Alabama - and he told me recently, he struggled to understand me sometimes in the early days.

Hopefully, his boss interviewed him first - unless his boss' boss did so as well as making the hiring decision unilaterally....

Lots of people have that turn, as long as you're happy and enjoy your job then no worries.

Because all white people speak English and are born in America ?
