Today, my boyfriend woke up wheezing terribly, aching, and sneezing. He's allergic to cats. I have 2 and they are my babies. He gave me an ultimatum, him or the cats. I haven't figured out how I'm going to tell him that I choose the cats. FML

Bravo for keeping your cats! It's nice to see at least one person who won't dump them just because their bf is allergic.

He probably hates cats cuz of his allergies. that's why he made you choose. cats are not a life partner. they get old and fat and even more useless. YDI for choosing a cat over human companionship.

A boyfriend isn't a life partner either. Until they make a long-term committment to each other, this decision doesn't need to be made at all.

You ALWAYS choose your pets over a bf/gf. Especially if they try emotional blackmail of "Its me or the cat (or whatever pet).

"I haven't figured out how I'm going to tell him that I choose the cats." Well you could always post in on FML -_- P.S Your boyfriend's a dick for making you choose. If he really cared about you he could grow a brain and get some allergy medication.

There's no guarantee the bf would stay with the OP even if she gave up the cats (which most likely would end up euthanized). A couple weeks or months down the road he may leave anyways and she'd feel even worse for giving up her pets. I have two dogs and if my bf demanded I get rid of them, the bf would be out the door asap!

honestly, why do you think they'd end up euthanized?

Because most animals sent to shelters end up being euthanized, since there are too many people who don't have the balls to choose their pets' lives over a temporary lover, or want to spend the money to get their animals spayed/neutered, etc. Most shelters are filled to the brim with unwanted animals, and most people aren't interested in adopting older dogs or cats; they're more interested in adopting puppies and kittens. They end up having to euthanize unwanted animals to have space for more unwanted animals that will probably end up being euthanized eventually as well...

lol op is awesome. I would choose my dog over any guy.

Good choice. Abandoned adult cats have a very low chance of being adopted and would probably end up euthanized. The boyfriend will get over it, or - if he has real feelings for the OP - try to devises other ways no meet.

Thank you, 160. 157, that is an old theory that has been disproved. I have studied canine behavior in depth. I'm no animal behaviorist but I can tell you that animals with advanced intelligence do have true emotions just like humans. The only difference psychologically is they are not able to use verbal language beyond basic commands. Dogs form relationships with humans and other dogs that are just as strong, if not stronger, than human-human relationships. It's not just dogs either. Wild elephants as well as other species have significant grief from death and have mourning rituals like humans. It's incredibly arrogant to think that we are so much better or different from animals when we are animals ourselves.

OP, not to worry. Just look around at the other FMLs to see the insensitive un caring way that people break up with their boy/girlfriends. You really are a jerk for choosing an ANIMAL ofer your boyfriend. I like animals, but I'm not going to change the way I live for one. For you animal rights activists, they're JUST animals, so get over it.

Moron, HE is a jerk for not taking medication in order to be with her. If he really cared enough about her, he would compromise. When there is no compromising, there's no love. When there's no love, there's no point. Learn that, you idiot.

He's the one demanding that *she* change her life for *him.* She's not giving any ultimatums here; he is.
