Parents will always hold a higher standard for one over the other - especially if the other is an iduot. They're okay with him getting bad tattoos and weed but think you belong in your own home. Take it as a positive.
How much have you got? Asking for a friend
It's not easy feeling like the unfavorite. Trust me, I know. Hang in there, though. The only validation you need is your own.
Depending on how much you get paid minimum wage saved every penny on eight hours a week is a little over 40,000$...that can't buy a house
My house was only $25,000 to buy it outright.
Maybe wages are different there, but here on minimum wage you'd be netting around $1500. If you live at home you should easily be able to save at least $700-800 a month. Over 3 years that is a pretty decent downpayment. I bought my first house at 20 making just a little over minimum wage and it was not that hard.
That figure of $1500 assumes the wage of a little over $9/hr. Minimum wage differs by state (and sometimes municipalities). Also, this assumes OP is working 40 hours a week. If OP is in school he/she most likely works only part time. Even if OP was able to put away $800/month, they would only have a little under $29,000. Where in the US are you able to buy a house for under $30,000? I'd love to know. In other words, get off your high horse.
People do realize it's not generally expected for an entire home to be payed for in one sitting? Down payment, anyone?
I just bought a house, 2 months ago. It feels like a lot of the people saying it can be done bought a house before the economical crisis. Banks are much stricter now. In order to get a loan I had to proof that I would keep 1250 euro after my monthly payback, that's because I'm single, its 2000 for couples. My payback is 960/month. Meaning I have to have a minimum wage of 2210/month. That's netto, that's 600 euro over minimum wage where I live, that's 2434 dollar. On top of that, the loan would only be for the apartment itself, everything else I needed to be able to pay myself. That means taxes, water pipes, notary, mortage costs,... In total for me a 57000 euro. If I would need to borrow more, the mortage would increase by 2% making it impossible for me to keep 1250 euro, so no loan. Im an intense saver with a big wage, living with my parents. I could only save up 27000 in 2 years. I didnt start of with a big wage, but saved every cent besides spending my first check on a playstation and 2 games. I was able to borrow 30000 from my parents and old furniture. I'm paying them back. If I didn't live with my parents and needed to earn everything myself, it would take me and my high wage at least 7 years to be able to buy a house. Its not the 50s paradise anymore so STFU.
Think it depends on op's age. He maybe much older than his little brother. Don't compare, I'd do what I liked on my first paycheck! If you've started saving since u started work then perhaps your parents are showing much favoritism to your brother.
Plot twist...I don't know what it is but between the lines it's in there somewhere. Dick parents, not really saving, brother shouldn't be comparison material?? I can just smell it in there!!
Don't let it stop you from doing what you're doing. Unless there's a game-changing detail you forgot to add, I would say ignore them and don't let them interfere with your mindset.

Do they think you're some big shot CEO or something?? Who can save enough for a house in just three years???
Just keep saving your money OP and you'll be rewarded in the end. Then when that happens you can have something to show to your parents whereas your brother won't.
