Today, my dad bought me a new laptop for my birthday. That's because he wants to use my old laptop for work, which is more expensive, has better specs, runs faster, and has a wider screen than my new computer. I just got a downgraded laptop as my birthday present. FML

Don't give him your old laptop! Keep both. It's a gift, not an exchange.

Why are people so unnecessarily NASTY about FMLs? So what if the OP got a laptop...it doesn't make them spoiled. I would be a little annoyed if I got a laptop and a.) Found out it was an exchange, not a gift and b.) it wasn't as good as the one I had previously. There are all ranges of FML on here...just because they're not ALL from impoverished orphans who get dumped at the altar, doesn't make the other OPs any less deserving. RE-LAX!

"My dad bought me a new laptop. FML." Go to hell, kid. He 90% likely bought you the other one and has the right to take it. You still have a laptop, so stop bitching.

exactly what I'm thinking. the op sounds really selfish and ungrateful to me. I would love a new laptop

well duhh... if it was better don't you think he would have kept it?

based on the fact he said it's an old laptop, i'm pretty sure he's not using anymore. it wouldn't make sense for him to call it his "old" laptop if he's still using it.

He means old as in older than the one he just got.

Ugh. What is with all of the comments BAWWWWWWing about OMG YOU HAVE A LAPTOP STOP COMPLAINING!1111 Just because someone has nicer things that you do doesn't make them horrible, selfish, greedy people. Whining about people starving in Africa in a discussion about a dad taking his son's laptop doesn't really make any sense. That's like whining about the state of the economy in a discussion about pie.

Geez, you don't think, do you? Pie doesn't cost $1,500 or more. And if someone made an FML that said "Today, my pie, which I paid $1,500 for, fell on the floor and got stepped on. I didn't even get to eat any. FML" we WOULD be talking about the economy because if someone can afford a pie that expensive then their life is not f***ed and they shouldn't complain.

just sell your new one keep the the money and say thank you and pretend don't give him any thing. then its a gift.

Just don't give him your old laptop. Duh. Pendejo. Just tell him that you already have your own laptop and you like it and ask him to return the new one or exchange it. It's not that hard.

How selfish of your dad! He basically got himself a present for YOUR birthday. Who does that?! D:

First of all, grow and pair, grow up and get a job, maybe then you can buy your own stuff and not depend on mommy and daddy buying shit for baby's gay ass birthdays, you spolied little shite. Second , all of you little whining bitches and assholes get over it, your dad this, your dad that, you have the right to...just STFU, you make me sick with all your raving and ranting about rights and wrongs, get a fecking life and stop being rat-lawyers, and if you don't like it go f**k yourselves you liberal POS, have a nice day!

It was your dad, not you, who purchased both laptops. Stop being spoiled and show some gratitude.

Wow, I actually want to walk into the Internet and bash some of these people over the head. Seriously. Who shoved a frog up your assholes? Does anyone honestly think that a parent who spoils their child would turn around and do something like this? People need to think before they set their hands to the keyboard. I highly doubt the OP is spoiled. Having a personal laptop does not make you spoiled. It's a typical tool for a university student, more or less a necessity.

Even if the kid is 16 or under, it's pretty rude to say "Here, you can have this nice laptop." Then later say "Oh wait, you can have this crappier laptop instead." Especially on their BIRTHDAY, when they should be getting a GIFT, not getting their past gift exchanged for lower-quality one. I'm not saying I don't understand that the dad might need it for work. But he could've at least told his son that he needed to use the laptop for work, and that he was getting him a downgraded one. And not given the laptop to him on his BIRTHDAY. The birthday gift could've been something different, and the exchange made separately.

well you know the op did comment saying that he needs it for college... so he is an adult. and I'm pretty sure it wasn't his dads laptop to begin with.
