Today, my dad came to my graduate art show wearing a t-shirt saying "My other daughter is a science major". He'd had it specially made. FML

Art is very hit or miss. She COULD be rich and famous.. Or she could end up working in retail or fastfood to make ends meet. Science almost always guarantees you a job.

Just sounds like he is proud of his daughters. Why advertise, when he is there to support you. Selfish much.

but since when is science a more reliable career path than art?? honestly, with the recession and budget cuts, particularly in the uk, science is by no means a guaranteed path to employment, my mum even went apeshit when i said i wanted to do astrophysics, and that's one of the good ones (by "good" i mean there are more jobs and more opportunities available because not many people do it and we dont know as much about space as, say, the human body so there's more scope for research, not that it's actually a better subject because that would be a really douchey thing to say).

I dunno, here in the US, medical jobs are in high demand. Medical (i.e. nursing) majors tend to be considered under the science major category.

oh ok. in the uk, i think science is separate from medicine but i could be wrong. medicine is really competitive here though, and research scientists make hardly any money, so in terms of career prospects art and science are about the same

A Bachelor of Art is BA but a Bachelor of Science is BS.

There's nothing wrong with science. Art is what's pretty useless unless you can draw and stuff. Ugh.

It's a joke, buddy. I have no disrespect toward science. But I do have disrespect for those who say art is useless. You know what is encompassed in "art?" Novels, short stories, poetry, sculpture, drawings, cartoons, photography, acting, dancing, sewing, paintings, music, theatre, film, graphic design, jewelry design, spoken word, and more. Art is not useless.

yeah but they might spend 37 zeroes' worth and be left a lowly billionaire.

Psh like a polo would be better... that shirt rocks

or she might not make all that money until she's dead

Buuuuuut more than likely she will fail, become a starving artist, and ultimately end up eating her paintings to survive. I hope acrylic sounds downright delicious to OP, or she's going to have a tough time.

I have a BS in biology and going for my masters, and uhhhh I make a lot more money than all my art major friends combined.
