Today, my dad came to my graduate art show wearing a t-shirt saying "My other daughter is a science major". He'd had it specially made. FML

Art is very hit or miss. She COULD be rich and famous.. Or she could end up working in retail or fastfood to make ends meet. Science almost always guarantees you a job.

sounds to me like he is just proud of both of you... he's showing off to everyone that one daughter is an artist (by being there) and the other is a science major. you just think it has to be all about you

Sounds like something my dad would do...I'm an art major as well. And as for all the assholes who keeps saying an art degree is useless, I'd like to see YOU spend the time and money thatartists have to! Artist design your homes, make the music you love so much, and the cartoons you watch every day. This persons day needs to apriciate his child. One day artists will make the most money, and all you haters will be working for us!

Keep that positive attitude. And artists are only a part of home design, all their ideas have to go through an engineer (scientist) before the home can be constructed, lest their flights of fancy kill the residents with unsound structure.

One day, science will make computer read minds. Another day, maybe tens of years after that, you will be able to draw whatever you want thanks to this precise technology designed by science. And this day, the most stupid of the 5 years old child running in your street will certainly be able to do more than an "art major". That day, science will have proved art to be meaningless, this very same day will mean that artists will have absolutely no job, and that they will have no chance. And never will someone who understands how the universe is working, how you can send something into space and make it reach its destination, never will someone having this very potential bow in front of someone who is only capable of drawing. And as it was said, artists are nothing more than the last touch of something, which can make it a bit more pretty, but the very object you are making prettier was designed by a scientist, and even if it would be far less entertaining to have no artists, life would be far harder if we had no scientists.

Actually, that technology would just broaden the art world since one would no longer need to become an art major in order to produce visually appealing art. Nonetheless, art isn't rendered meaningless because everyone can do it. Saying this would render them unemployable is profoundly retarded, as it would mean you believe that once everyone can produce art there would be no more need for it. Not to mention, that technology would still be limited. Sure, everyone could draw something with the skill of an accomplished artist - but you forget about other forms of art, such as sculpture. If you allow the machine to create it, you're not the creator - even if the source idea was yours. You would not be an artist, just a muse. = As well as practical applications of art, what about advertisements? Would they suddenly become text based because everyone could draw? Of course not. You didn't start off badly, but you ended up sounding ignorant.

Just because scientists can trick people into thinking Ke$ha can sing doesn't mean real singers, like my girlfriend who can hit whistle tone and fill a theater with her voice without using a mic, can no longer sing. Just because a computer can formulate a story doesn't mean it's better than an artists. Machines will always lack the emotional touch, and the beauty of an accidental error. I love technology, but I believe that technology enhances the beauty of art, not art that of technology.

He was speaking of technology allowing everyone to express the art within them, an engineer with a computer that will print the picture in his mind would have no use for someone with actual artistic talent. The human touch as you put it is still there, the same as buying a print of a painting, it's a person's vision, but created by machine.

Optimistic for op, but pessimistic for op's sister.

Get a shirt made that says "My other dad is actually decent."
