Art is very hit or miss. She COULD be rich and famous.. Or she could end up working in retail or fastfood to make ends meet. Science almost always guarantees you a job.

#94 Making money isn't the only measure of success. OP Your dad is a tool. When your next big art event rolls around, don't even tell him it's happening and when he finds out and asks why, remind him how he disrespected your creativity.

To those people accusing OP of not having a sense of humour: ridiculing your child's career choice at their grad show is not funny. A good parent doesn't make a joke at their child's expense, especially not in public at an impotant event.

Yeah, WTF is a science major? Saying "engineering" isn't even specific enough (I.e. mechanical, electrical etc.) Science could be physics (which is still quite broad) chemistry, or more specifically composites, or structural engineering, there is a nearly endless supply. Science is too vast for even a 10 year degree.

This Art is a phony major. Meant for football players who are on full scholarship to pretend to go to class and get laid by dumb Art major chicks....

Yeah Im sure all the animators and Pixar and Disney will agree with you. And yes before you say anything 3D animation is an art major along with traditional animation, fine art(the one everyone thinks of when someone says art major) interior design and jewelerry making. So yes what a useless fake major it is.

Fine art is far from useless but just like web design and 3d animation it is not something you need a degree to do. People want art peices for their houses, concept designs for characters (yes a fine art degree or an illustration one can let you do this) Calling an art major useless is like saying being in a band is useless, if you enjoy it you'll continue to do it whether your job is in another field or not and for those that do make it they must be truely happy. Imagine getting paid for doing what you love all your life.

so why are you disagreeing, 159? if art is something you dont need a degree for, then an art degree IS useless. like, you'd be better off actually doing art and making money than wasting your time on a degree if, as you say, you don't need one. i don't know anything about art degrees so i can't vouch for the validity of that statement but you guys are saying THE SAME THING just differently: that an art degree is a waste of time because you don't need one to pursue a career in art.
