Today, my family is flying to Hawaii for a longed-for holiday. Well, my husband and children are; I'm in a hospital bed awaiting surgery on kidney stones that I never knew I had. Hopefully they'll send me a postcard. FML

Drover7 tells us more.

I am the OP and wish to thank everyone for their well wishes and kindness. Bit of an update: I have an infection in both kidneys so they can't yet remove the big 7mm stone that is stuck half way. Surgeons put in a stent and my pain filled hazy brain decided I just wanted to be with family so I stupidly boarded a plane to Hawaii! Now I am writhing about in a hotel bed (with a beautiful view of Waikiki and Diamond Head) and still ruining my family's holiday. I didn't realise how serious my condition was when I assured my husband that if he got on the plane I would follow a day later so it's all my fault. I've made a shitty situation even worse. FML

I'm sorry OP. Hope the surgery goes good and your family doesn't rub in missing the vacation.

Hopefully 1. You had travel insurance and 2. Your travel insurance covers it. (Aka some travel insurances have a policy when you unable to fly because of a temporary medical condition) if both of those do apply you should go on a girls trip to Hawaii

I did not realize women can pass kidney stones. I always thought God did that to men because the pain of passing stone is equal to the pain of giving birth. Hope you pass your stone soon so you can recover fast. Hopefully the recovery is quick and you and still fly out and join the family.

I've heard of women who did both saying that they'd rather give birth again.

Thats unfortunate. Also, family are* I had to be that guy

o.O you had to be that guy who incorrectly corrects someone's grammar? Family implies a unit, thus making it a singular now. So.. family is*

Presumably OP is in the US, which means "family is" is correct. And even if you're using British English grammar rules, both are correct.

Presumably it says OP is in Australia, which you can see on the app and on the website itself.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine going on holiday and leaving my wife in hospital like that. Definitely FYL

Jeez, you'd think your husband would say **** the vacation and stay by your side throughout the whole surgery. You guys have some talking to do, OP.

Or OP said its a relatively minor surgery, I'm an adult and can handle it on my own, you should go so the kids don't miss out? Maybe they've been saving for this vacation for a long time, can't cancel it at short notice or they'll lose the money and the husband has gone so the kids can still go. I'm sure they discussed it and he didn't just say **** you I'm getting my vacation whether you're ill or not.

Pretty sure they have talked it through, some vacations can't be cancelled, they may not be able to get the money back.

I know if my family had saved up for that trip, is be telling them to go. It sucks for OP, but it's not really worth throwing all that money away to have, a now disappointed/angry, family at your bedside. I hope your surgery goes well and you have a quick recovery! Just tell them to take lots of pictures and bring you back some sand :)

At least with the kids gone you'll have a quiet house to yourself to recover in. Hope you get the chance to go later and treat yourself!

I feel for you, OP. I just spent two weeks in the hospital and almost lost my leg. They were able to save it after the CDC got involved. Anyway, enough about me, the hospital is no fun.

they must have been pretty big kidney stones. I've had kidney stones twice and went went home with pain meds and passed them on my own..

Consider yourself lucky. For a lot of people it is incredibly painful and the stones have to be broken up in order to pass, if they can even be passed at all. There are also different types of stones and some are worse than others.

pray your surgery goes well, and hope you will be able to enjoy many other lovely family trips to exotic places!

Seriously... is postcards still a thing??

Op first I am so sorry you had kidney stones. They are so painful. I hope you make a full and speedy recovery. Second, I hope your family can bring you something amazing from their vacation. Third, next time you will get to go. Don't let it get you down. Again, feel better soon.
