It's about the fact that he was irresponsible enough to buy something he couldn't afford, tried to foist the responsibility on her to pay for her own gift, and then revoked the engagement. It'd be a whole different story if he'd proposed with a less expensive ring or with no ring. He was a jerk.
You can be engaged without a ring. Looks like someone was trying to get out of the wedding.
The ring doesn't make an engagement, just get a fake one until he can afford a real one.

That sucks, but I have to admit that his approach was a smart way to get out of an engagement without ending the relationship.
My husband didn't get me a ring. I have my Great Grandmothers diamond, and my mom bought my wedding band as my wedding gift. Difference is, my husband was just poor... not a jerk who dangles something like that in front of you and then yanks it away. Dump his ass.
