New boyfriend? That escalated quickly.
It is a well known understanding that engagement rings are to be returned if the engagement fails. If she refuses to give it, this would be totally worth going to small claims court. What she did was awful, but at least you didn't marry her!
What? I honestly don't understand this. I mean, it would be nice if she did return the ring, but I don't see how she's legally obliged. It was a gift. Do you think that after break ups, partners should have to return every single gift they were given and pay back all the money spent on them during the relationship? I don't see how an engagement ring is any different to any other piece of jewellery she was bought.
@83 there is, at least in America, a tradition of giving back the ring if the wedding doesn't happen. Most courts will rule in favor of this unspoken rule. perhaps where op lives it is different
Engagement rings are a "verbal agreement" of marriage. If it falls through then it needs to be returned. If it is indeed a "gift" then there better be similar exchange of value on her part too. I'm giving you a $6000. ring as your gift and you're give me a $20. bottle of cologne? Yeah, that doesn't cut it!
Maybe I'm so shocked at this actually being a thing because a) my engagement ring cost less than £200 including insurance and b) my fiancé also got an engagement ring, similar price. So for one of us to demand the ring back if our engagement failed would seem more petty than if it cost several grand, I guess. I guess this is just a product of a highly sexist and unfair system. In my view, it shouldn't have to be the man to propose (assuming a straight couple, me and my partner are neither of us straight but I'm aware the majority are!) and the gifts should be of equal value, and therefore considered as 'gifts'. At the moment, it seems like engagement rings are like... a refundable deposit for your new wife. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back! Which just seems weird to me? All I can say is, they shouldn't have got engaged.
I'm sorry that happened to you, but at least this happened before the wedding an not after cause that would hurt more, it just goes to show that she can't handle a real relationship.
What a bitch...at least it wasn't like the day before your wedding...but you'll find someone else...
What a **** you'll find someone better
you left before it got worse...bad part is the ring. Take it back
I know the feeling, OP. Mine did that less than 2 months into our marriage. You'll find someone that will be faithful and make you happy. But yeah... FYL
You should totally report her photos.
Facebook often don't remove hate speech or horrifically violent pictures despite multiple reports. They're not likely to bother about this.
