Was pretty polite to be honest. Now you have time to plan how you'll deal. If you live together you've got time to find somewhere to live or look for room mates to replace her, settle any money owed to each other. Even if you don't live together, you can collect any belongings. This is far better than returning home and finding your things out side or stomping out with a box of hastily packed belongings then fighting over lost DVDs for 6 months.
