Today, my husband called me from the store, trying to decide whether or not to buy the new games console he's been wanting. I'd already purchased one and hid it, ready for Christmas Day. I couldn't talk him into not buying himself one. There goes a $500 surprise. FML

I'd end up admitting it and ruining the surprise before he bought it.

Maybe this time you should have just told him?

Yea. I think it is better to have told him so he doesn't buy it. Now it is just a bad present because he already has one.

smart man. seems like he bought the xbox one.

Couldn't have said 'babe maybe it's better to wait until after Christmas?' Hope either one of you kept the receipt ! Fyl

My siblings do that sort of stuff all the time. I keep telling them to wait until after the holidays and birthdays before they go out and buy themselves things- especially if the items in question are on the wish lists they gave everyone. There's already the chance that multiple people will end up giving identical gifts (again) so no need to add one more by buying it for oneself. Sometimes your hints have to be repetitive and obvious, but it's better than ruining the surprise. However, in a situation like yours with an expensive gift, ruining the surprise is better than having to return it because some "genius" couldn't take a hint.

Props to you for getting your man a console and props to him for choosing the Xbox One as his next console.

This is where u get your money back and buy the other next generation console!

Surprise him with some new games and extra accessories like additional controllers with the money you get from returning it!

Sell it to someone else, maybe a friend with some kids that like games
