Was he being literal or was he finding an excuse to get a divorce?
Saving money is always an important.
My parents actually honestly considered separating so that they could afford for my brother, sister and I to go to college. As is, we are slightly above the cut off for financial aid. Thankfully, I received a full ride on scholarships, my sister has some debt, but it's manageable, and my little brother has his heart set on the Air Force. Unfortunately though, times are rough and many couples have considered separating "on paper" to save money on taxes and education for their children. Hopefully, OP, it's only a passing thought amidst financial difficulties and not a poor excuse to get an actual divorce.
That's America. We reward failure and punish success. If you've been responsible and made good choices in life, you gotta pay for it.
#88 Brazil is the exact same: punish those who are trying to have a better life. If you're rich and can pay for things, good for you. If you're super poor, someone will just give you stuff or help you one way or the other, but if you've worked your ass off and finally managed to get off poverty and be a little better financially... screw you, you gonna have to work twice as hard to pay for everything yourself. Not that there shouldn't be financial aid for people trying to be better off that really need the initial push, but everything is based mostly on income alone so it ends up way too often punishing people who worked hard for their slightly better income and helping out the people who just sit on their asses waiting for the government or other organization to give them stuff.
You have awesome parents
some people do that for life insurances but still live together and in love.
And what about other benefits...
Ouch, I'm sorry op.
LOL!

So then after taxes you get married again? You could make this a yearly thing.
I know of couples who are "separated", but live in the same house for tax breaks. Just another way to beat the system I guess.
