Today, my husband suggested we get divorced, "for tax purposes". FML

So then after taxes you get married again? You could make this a yearly thing.

I know of couples who are "separated", but live in the same house for tax breaks. Just another way to beat the system I guess.

oh yea? tell him youve hired a contract killer for "insurance purposes" what an asshat that guy. love ya OP

My dad's cousin did that. He doesn't work any more, because he gets carer's benefits as his dad's carer and his ex-wife's, his ex-wife gets them as her sister's and mother's carer, and his dad gets them as his mother's carer. He still lives in the same house and is basically married to his ex, it just isn't on paper so he gets money for 'caring' for her. The rest of the family laughs at them because we have an ounce of self-esteem to go and work for money.

In today's world, it's all about the money.

That is called decreasing the funds in our system illegally. Don't pay your taxes and don't expect good roads or quality education! I'm just sayin'

I get that money is important to live and pay bills and all that good (read: awful) stuff. But if it was going to be such an issue, why did you get married in the first place. Isn't it because you loved each other and that you promised to be together FOR RICHER, FOR POORER!

It cost me damn near 6 grand to get my divorce from my public toilet of an ex wife - he's an idiot if he thinks it would benefit

Yes, because I assume she fought you for things? If they both decided to get a divorce for tax reasons I doubt it would cost much of anything at all other then the divorce papers?

@132: It actually happens more than you think. It mostly has to do with having no official ownership of things. If you are in financial trouble, or your company is going bankrupt, get a divorce and put everything in her name. That way, they can't get any money from you. Afterwards, you get back together and you have your stuff back. Doesn't always work and I think it's illegal, but some get away with it, since it is kinda hard to prove...

Tell him you're choosing to remain abstinent for "prevention of pregnancy" reasons :)

Hey, count yourself lucky. Hotblack Desiato of the band Disaster Area had to spend a year dead for tax reasons.

It is actually not unheard of. A friend of mines parents did that for that very reason. (Also because one of them was filing bankruptcy and it made it so it did not affect the other).

if the only thing that changes is the government's definition of marriage and everything between you and your husband is still exactly the same (still with each other, no one looking for a "side piece", etc.) and you both actually Dane money at the end, it may very well be worth it... you can still be married without being "married"
