I know of couples who are "separated", but live in the same house for tax breaks. Just another way to beat the system I guess.

I had to comment on this because my wife got disabled at work but due to changes in laws could not get dissability since I "made to much" and we couldn't afford medical bills and food for our kids. So for us getting divorced though we didn't want to gave us about 20k more a year due to laws.

my sister did that because her husband owed ton of child support and they would take her tax return money. they still been together for 10 years since paper divorce
