Today, my insane roommate yelled at me for using the word "stupid" because apparently it is a slur against mentally disabled people. Later, she went on and on about this "queer" club she's attending to meet "queer" people to talk about "queer" issues. She's not gay. I am. FML

TooLesbian tells us more.

I am the OP for this post. She is not my friend, just the sister of a friend (I live with both). Where I live in Australia, "queer" is still used as a derogatory word against gay people, and gay men and women are often called that by homophobes in public. She is completely straight, but thinks she is revolutionary by joining the gay rights movement as an "ally". Because she knows gay people, she assumes that she is entitled to use words we call ourselves. She knows I'm not comfortable with the word "queer" because I've had it used against me by bullies at high school, but she continues to use it because "it's an umbrella term" (although it isn't, some a word SOME LGBT people call themselves). She isn't a homophobe, and I'm not insinuating that she is - just really annoying.

Firstly, stupid is not a slur of mentally handicap people. It's someone lacking common sense or intelligence. Next, I've never heard anyone get upset over the word "queer". Is it an off limits word? I mean obviously the n word is a loaded heavy word, and is very bad. I never thought "queer" to be a derogatory term in any way. I've heard it to mean "odd", and I've heard it to be synonymous with "homosexual". I just did some digging, and even that is apparently becoming a slur. Our society has a problem with this whole "political correctness" thing. I think what is politically correct today will be a slur tomorrow. "Mentally retarded" used to be the politically way to say it. Now it's off limits. I think what we really should be looking at is the *intent* behind the word. This is difficult, but is it any better than finding out if someone is up to date on today's politically correct jargon? We shouldn't hold it against a person because they are linguistically behind the times.

According to a few SJW's I've seen on Tumblr, it was her responsibility to educate you why it's viewed as an ableist word in a non-violent way... Obviously, she failed that part...

your roommate sounds like a narcissistic social-justice warrior. i recommend breaking off the friendship and finding a new roommate ASAP.

Move out..quickly and quietly in the night so the ignorant psycho can't hear you.

to be fair, stupid is a slur and queer is an umbrella term used by the lgbtqia+ community. sooooooo...
