Today, my local USPS delivery man refused to deliver any more packages to my house, because in the past, my dogs have barked at him and he feels threatened. He also filed a complaint about our house because apparently my driveway has branches that, to him, are considered "hazardous." FML

18emikot tells us more.

We have a Chihauhau and a Springer. The Chihauhau rarely goes out and only has a few teeth left so I doubt she could hurt someone. Our Springer is a sweetheart, she's all bark but no bite. Whoever she goes out she wears a bark collar and the remote is always by someone's side. There are no protruding branches in our driveway. None. We trim them regularly.

Ugh, we had a postal worker once that kept getting mad at us because she had to take the larger packages up to the door. I'm sooo sorry you have to do your job.

Why can't he just walk where the branches aren't hanging over the driveway?

I am a carrier. And yes, hanging branches that stand the possibility of scratching our vehicles are not something we mess with, by direction of our bosses. If you have an issue, contact your post office, and your postmaster will explain why to you. Dogs, too, are a credible threat, all of the time. I've been bitten by dogs whose owners swear, "My dog doesn't bite!"

The trees ARE trimmed, as the op stated before you commented. The dogs i understand unless they are fenced off from the door or are inside

My dad is a postman and when he or any of the other postpeople delivers post to my friend's house they tell her or her mother to come out to the driveway and get it because of their dog who's big and barks a lot, lol. Get the USPS guy to get you to come to your driveway maybe?

Given OP's comments, it sounds like the dogs are barking from inside the house & it's just too scary for the guy. Branches that are hazardous to a person would make a driveway unusable, doesn't seem likely (especially since OP says they're trimmed). I once had a USPS person refuse to deliver mail because I live on a hill and they have to go up about 15 steps to get to the door. Of course, everyone on our side of the street has the same problem & they can for the most part just cut across lawns once going part way up.

We are not allowed to cut across lawns, but regardless, if they don't like the route because they need to walk up that many stairs, they should get a new route. We are fighting in Canada to keep door to door delivery, and I hate it when I hear carriers complain about a few houses on their route because of stairs or long driveways.

I wish we could cut lawns! I did one route where there was just s little patch of lawn between her house and her neighbours, that could easily be stepped over, and she blocked the path and put up signs saying we had to walk around because it was our job lol. We get in big trouble if we are caught. Big enough so that even when people tell us we can cut their lawns we don't because a neighbour of theirs might see and call it in.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're complaining. Sorry OP.

Here, if there is a dog on site, by law a courier does not have to enter the property. It's a Health and Safety risk - would you rather have to pick up your parcel, or be sued and have the dogs destroyed?

What a child, there's occupational hazard everywhere, and he chooses to complain about something that is likely not a problem.

We are taught to assume that a dog in the yard is a problem. It is just not worth the risk. It sounds like the dogs were barking from inside the house though, so that would make it a non issue.

wooooowwww that mailman has fired some shots time make them branches more hazardous then before ?

I am so very tired of hearing people complain about their postal workers and their "sweet dogs." Your dogs aren't sweet. Just because it's small, doesn't mean that it can't do damage. The small breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, etc. are the most likely to bite. If a dog was going nuts on you, would you still walk up to it? Probably not. Yes, they get paid to do this job. BUT, they also have to think of their safety and the safety of other carriers delivering not mail on your route. Train your dogs on something that is more consistent than a remote bark collar, and trim your branches. Be a responsible owner.

Being a USPS worker we are not allowed to go anywhere near houses with dogs out because if we get bitten, we're at fault for going to the house and if we trip over those branches, we're at fault for going in the driveway. Management at my office has been riding us about being safer. If a house has more than three steps and no railing we are not allowed to deliver their mail or packages either. They're very, very strict.

A co-worker of mine got written up and a suspension because she sprained her ankle when someone's rotten step went out from under her foot.

Report him for not doing his job. We have a USPS delivery person who drove across our lawn, scratched the side of a neighbors vehicle, and we (as well as other townspeople)are constantly getting other people's mail.
