Today, my mother won't give me any painkillers for my migraine. She believes that "When medicine goes into your stomach, the acids stop the medicine from working" and that "It's all in people's heads when medicine works". FML

I would like to give your mum an award of excellence on behalf of all the staff of "Complete Idiot University" also known as CIU.

It must suck to have dumbass parents. You're forced to suffer because they have a double digit IQ

the "migrain medicine" you were taking is actually just caffine. so you could then substitute your pills with coffee.

Caffeine actually aggravates migraines.

Thats called the placebo effect - you think its working, it actually isn't but the thought of it working makes you feel better. Medicines usually work. To be honest, your mom should give you painkillers even if she thinks they don't work because if the placebo effect made you feel better it would still be accomplishing something, right?

My mother won't feed me. She believes that when the food goes into my stomach, the acid dissolves the food and it stops working. She also tells me that people don't need to eat to survive, it's all in your head.

my mom was like this, except that she thought that modern medicine is evil. i have suffered through many, many migraines because of this.

My mom has had similar theories, even saying that dandruff just means you didn't rinse the shampoo out of your hair well enough, which my dad couldn't believe when she told him why she didn't buy any dandruff shampoo for him. The first time I had a migrane she didn't believe me and I had to walk through the house practically blind after vomiting, bumping into tables and chairs with my family just watching, to find pain medicine. And then I went back to my room to sleep in the dark, bumping into stuff again.

yeah, superstition(or "stupidstition") is a big pain in the ass. if modern medicine really didn't work the human mortality rate would be much, much higher. people like our moms belong in the middle ages.

if she gets a heart attack, don't take her to the hospital.

Actually when you experience a migraine, your brain becomes hyper-excitable, and responds to the outside environment in different ways. Now this is caused by malfunctions in certain types of ion channels in the brain, the communication process of your nervous system, Now taking painkillers, numbs the pain receptors making them slower to react giving some relief. The intense throbbing is caused by, basically, too much blood in certain parts of your head. Migraines can be caused by stress dehydration, heatstroke, etc. So it is important to get pain relief for the symptoms, and sip water with electrolytes, diluted Gatorade is fine. The last point I want to make, is before people jump to conclusions themselves on this topic, do some research or consult a doctor.
