Today, my parents made me quit a school team that I absolutely loved, because women "aren't supposed to play sports." and were worried that if I stayed on the team, I'd develop a manly physique. FML

It's cases like these where it's acceptable to stand up against your parents. I know that people around you agree, and look at these comments. Don't quit. Be yourself OP.

Use your strength to kick them both in the shins

In 40 years they're gonna wonder why no one visits them in the care home... Don't listen to them on this, they're being sexist and immature. If you love what you do then nothing and no one should stop you doing it.

If not getting to play a sport in high school means she'll completely abandon her parents in their old age, then she's a much worse person than they are. It may suck now, but in ten years it won't matter what extracurriculars she did in high school.

Don't let them do this. Girls can play sports; girls DO play sports! And if you really love it, you have to stand up to them.

As a parent I can assure you that the biggest fear of a parent is not the manly physique a girl may (or may not) develop, its too much free time and drugs (idle mind is devils workshop). Scare them? Tell you mislaid your joint and want to find it, haven't they seen it? Or if they are so old fashioned as they seem they might get scared if you introduce them to "your GF". Like "I have to let that energy out somewhere". Sports may be lesser of possible evils even in their eyes. I'm so happy my parents never opposed to sports, and it was really long time ago. Speaking of "old fashioned".

Um. Or they might see sports as gateway to peer pressured parties where their daughter would be urged to drink, take drugs, etc.

Then they'll bitch that you don't do anything and have been gaining weight. Gee, it's like I need some sort of physical activity. Like a team of athletic girls to push me to exert myself in some kind of organized physically active group of my peers!

I'm sorry to hear that, OP D: I hope that they come around and that you can continue to do what you love. Is there perhaps somebody that you could speak to, in the hope that they can talk some sense into your parents?

We're your parents born around the fifties who thinks that way about girls now a days?

A women in athletic shape is not "manly" it's badass and it shows how much work you put into the sport you love. I'm sorry your parents are so sexist

Don't be too angry at them. They are just looking out for you (a least they think they are). But still get them to be okay with it. A lot of men like strong women by the way.
