Your professor isn't wrong and males usually have condom catheters not ones inside.
Also when I had mine I was so out of it I didn't know it was there! I was screaming for a nurse cause I had to pee but couldn't get up on my own ... Finally they told me that I had a catheter I could just go
I'm male, and both catheters I've had were inserted. Hurt like hell too.
Having had more than one or two catheters, I agree with the professor. Having one is painful enough on its own, but having nurses that show no empathy while one is in adds insult to injury.
Sounds like a joke to me.
I agree with the professor, I had a catheter after spine sugery, and it was very painful, and wasn't draining, so had a painfully full bladder as well. I asked repeatedly for it to be removed, seeing as I was mobile & could make it to the toilet. The doctor was in agreeance, but the NURSE is actually the one who was unsympathetic, and waited 12 hours (on top of the 12-ish hours I already had with it by then) to take it out. My doctor was very angry when he found out the nurse did not remove it like he ordered. Maybe it should be required for both doctors & nurses? ;-)
OP here. It was an FML because a few days prior, I learned that enemas are a fetish and he already talked too much about his personal life. He basically implied that he was into enemas. I don't disagree with him that it would be good for the students to have each thing so they could be more sympathetic to their patients.
OP here. Didn't have an account when I posted this, but now I do. This was an FML because a few days before, I learned that enemas are a fetish. He was basically implying that he enjoyed enemas with the "It might change your life" line. I agree that they should so they can be sympathetic to their patients and all that, but that comment was inappropriate.
So do it. My spouse was expected to self-cath and I helped her with it. One day I tried to do it on myself and was a learning experience--don't dish it out if you can't take it.
I have to agree with your professor. It will change how you interact with your patients when they have to get that crap done.

Having experienced both and seeing how completely unsympathetic my doctors were to pain and discomfort I agree with him.
Your professor is not exactly wrong.
