Today, my psycho landlord threatened to take me to court if I don't pay my rent on time this month. I'd totally understand if he weren't my father-in-law, and if the reason I didn't pay on time before was because of hospital fees I'd incurred for an emergency appendectomy. FML

That's harsh, hope you're well again OP, and that you can come to an agreement on your rent :(

sometimes you're just far better off without relatives!

Honestly... FYL, and like the rest said, just don't rent from family. They can be savage. And ignore the others who are blaming you for paying for surgery first, I mean, rather have you in debt than dead.

Um I would get the person you're married to to have a discussion with their own father about how much of an asshole he's being and that you shouldn't have to pay that month since you're important and he can live for a moth without a payment which you shouldn't have to be paying in the first place Should be there free since you're frickin family like wow

Why would the fact you are related to your landlord somehow exempt you from financial responsibility? Do you really want to abuse that fact to get out of your bills? Why should family be allowed to live at your house for free? Seriously? And, judging from the wording used in the post, it isn't the first time payment was late...

Shade is right you fool! Family doesn't mean free... How narrow is your thought process to think that even for a moment.

You totally deserve it. Just because you are family doesn't mean you can shirk your financial responsibilities to him. He has bills he has to pay and probably relies on your rent to pay them on time. You need to save money every month for setbacks like this.

So, not his problem! Just because he is family doesn't mean you don't have to pay your bills. If the landlord wasn't family what would you have done?

Life is a female dog then you die.. Maybe save money for things like this.. And don't live with family..

In this situation he's your landlord. This is a business transaction. It's not his problem you had an emergency operation. He has to pay bills too. It's harsh yes, but not unfair. This is why I'll never give friends or family a loan.

As a landlord, all I can say is "pay your rent!"

Just because he's your father in law doesn't make it ok to be late on the bill. What if he weren't your father in law, would you still expect them to be understanding? I know emergencies suck, but you've got to plan for emergencies. They've still got bills to pay and probably a mortgage to pay on that place plus the place they live in.
