Today, my roommate thought it would be a good idea to show me his huge new tarantula despite knowing that I have extremely severe arachnophobia. I ended up killing it with a book and apparently now owe him $500. FML

Yeah, you don't owe him anything. If he knew about your deathly fear, then he was negligent in entrusting you to not kill the thing. Let him take you to court, they can rule in your favor under a "reasonable person should know this" defense.

if he showed it you while it was in the tank, YDI. you should pay him. If he took it out, he knew what he was getting into.

I have pet dogs. They're big and some people are scared of them although they are harmless. That doesn't give anyone the right to kill them! You shouldn't just kill your roommate's pet because you're scared of spiders! Admittedly what he did was poorly thought out but you have to take some responsibility! Get help for your phobia instead of lashing out! And suck up the cost of the damage you did. Even if you don't understand how much a pet can mean to someone, you destroyed your roommate's property, which is a big no no. I wouldn't be surprised if you end up stuck with the cost of paying the rent alone after he moves out!

You asshole!!!! What'd you kill his pet for?!?

hey I do same thing and said it's his fault and he get what he got

dude those type of phobias will never go away spiders and snakes are freaking scary I get itchy when I see them will be a phobia of those all my life

If he knew you were afraid of spiders and "showed" it to you to get a laugh, then tell him to piss off. Doing something to intentionally cause another person distress is considered assault and not only can you have him charged but you can sue him for pain and suffering too. To use the example of #175 You have (big) pet dogs - but of you intentionally shout 'sic em' knowing the other guy is deathly afraid and the other guy overreacts and one of your dogs gets hurt or killed, it's your fault for using your dogs to torment that person. It's also considered cruelty to animals and the pet owner can be charged with that too because it puts the animal at risk of exactly what happened with the OP. Call any humane society and they will back this up.

I don't understand why your roommate would pay five hundred dollars for a tarantula when you can get one for twenty at petco.

#182, if the roommate is a big tarantula enthusiast, he could have ordered a special species online. Petco seems to generally buy only one species of tarantula, and OP's roommate may have wanted something exotic. There are some expensive spiders out there, and they require special (expensive) shipping and apparently can't be sent through normal mail. The roommate may have been exaggerating and trying to get more than he paid for it from OP though. If the spider involved actually really was huge for a tarantula, it could have even been a Goliath bird-eating spider, and I've seen them selling online for about $100. Those things are the size of a MAN'S HAND. Arachnophobia or no, I could see anyone who isn't into them being absolutely horrified. That being said, I feel sorry for the roommate's spider.

F your life, f your roommate's life, and especially f the tarantula's life. You're all f'd. :(

Today, I was just chilling, doing tarantula stuff when this enormous, terrifying thing saw me and started shrieking. The last thing I saw was something descending from a height. :( FML

Wait, if you're afraid of spiders how did you muster up enough courage to get close to it and kill it with a book witch probably took a few swings to kill it.
