Today, my son's homework was to write a story about what he wants to be when he grows up. He wrote that he plans on being unemployed and living at home until we throw him out, then he'll live under a bridge. He's only 12, but already planning for a future as an unemployed bum. FML

Ambitious much? Don't worry, 12-years olds think they're simply amazing, and he probably thought it was hilarious.

He's 12. Most 12 year old boys don't know what they want to be in their future. I'm sure he'll change his mind OP. Don't worry.

As a teacher myself, I would be happy if someone of my students wrote that kind of a story. It's way more creative than all those story's about being a vet/doctor/fireman/policeman... Anyway, it's a stupid writing exercise and your son is a genius. He was joking, don't worry.

Agreed, although when I was in school most teachers would never have taken a joke like that. When I think back on how most of my teachers reacted to "jokes" I told in school, I'm reminded of the "Independent Thought Alarm" from that episode of the Simpson's. My parents often received reports like this one from my teachers about things I had said or done which convinced my overly paranoid teachers that I was on the wrong track in life or that I was some kind of bad apple that was going to corrupt all the "good" students (most of whom were too doped out on ADD medication to know what was happening around them anyway).

Why does he bother doing homework? Hardcore unemployed bums don't need to polish their creative writing skills. Lots of unemployed bums are frustrated authors, but homelessness in not their career goal.
