Today, on my way out of the subway station, I noticed an older woman standing at the bottom of a flight of stairs with a large cart. I went up to her and asked if she needed help getting it up the stairs. She looks me up and down and says, "No, not from you." FML

She may have meant it like you were thin/looked frail. I don't think she was personally insulting you. It was still nice of you to offer though!

maybe the old lady wanted a strong guy to help her up

more evidence for my claim that the elderly do nothing but hurt society

It's nice of you to offer, please keep offering, as said someone earlier, the world needs it. I always offer my help to people watching subway maps (or regular maps) here in france, and actually nobody has ever been really rude to me (it happened some did refuse, but usually when you try to find a way to get to the tour eiffel, it's not easy since the subway station next to it is on a ****** up line with like 9 terminuses)

"if your gonna try be nice and she shoots you down- her loss" Yeah, I would have said 'Very well, best of luck!' and taken the stairs two at a time right in front of her :p

I don't get this? How is this an FML? She just didn't want help. I don't think she would insult u when u just offered 2 help. Old ladies r just cranky.

Haha. Something like this happened to my dad's brother when he was younger. This old lady was walking up the hill with her groceries in the middle of winter. It was really icy, so my grandmother told him to go outside and help her. Well, he went outside and offered the lady help. "Do you have a car?" she asked. "No," he told her, "I don't own a car." "What help are you then?" she told him, "I don't need your help." And she continued to walk up the hill.

Your heart was in the right place! I think you should've pushed the cart over and then ran away. XD

She didn't mean it as in "You aren't handsome, or strong enough" She just meant she didn't need help. People talked different back in the day, you just kind of have to decode it.
