Today, there was an issue with the sewage system at work. It smelled like somebody took a turd, left it in the sun to marinate, threw up on it, then put in the air conditioning to fill the store with nauseating stink. I nearly threw up multiple times because we weren't allowed to leave early. FML

This legit happened at my work today And everyone was mad that I wouldn't let them leave early because the store was going to reopen in like 40 minutes

... they were rightly mad at you and should have left. That's a major health risk. If the problem was going to be resolved in the next 40 minutes, you should have told them to leave and then come back if they were still scheduled for that time.

Why are you even working? I don't know about you but if I walked into a store to buy some things and smelled that nastiness, I'd turn around and walk right back out to go across town to shop at the store that doesn't smell like sewage.

Anyone whose employer tries to make them stay through something like this, call OSHA (assuming you are in the US) Sewage in the building is not something you can legally be forced to just work through

If it's a grocery store, go to the spice aisle. Find the spearmint extract. Next go to the cosmetic section and find a small thing of Vaseline. Add the spearmint oil to the Vaseline a bit at time mixing it in until the Vaseline smells strongly of spearmint. When things reek next time, wipe a small bit of the mixture under your nose. Voila! Mint will overwhelm the nastiness.

A very vivid description. Tells us how much you have gone through!

I live a few minutes away from a valley that is mostly a rural farming community. When the valley starts fertilizing the fields, the entire town reeks for days until the wind changes. This FML reminded me that it's that time of year again. Blech.

I'm fairly certain you're required to leave the premises if there is any "fecal matter odor or presence" in the area. Same with public transportation, public buildings, educational locations, etc. It's a health concern. At least in the state of WA. I'd look it up in your state for future reference, OP.

I agree with you, this can't be legal at all. And aside from the health issues, you have the right to a clean and workable work environment too. But then again, I have read so many work related FML's from the US, I wonder if the department of labor even exists anymore...

I feel for you OP. Place I work at had a leaking sewage pipe that took more than two months to fix due to corporate bureaucracy. Seriously, they apparently couldn't spare the cash to have one of the maintenance guys put a pvc pipe on, but they sure as hell had the cash to go to motherf***ing Cancun. Didn't always smell, but I know that the pipe leaking was probably putting all kinds of nasty in the air.
