Today, upon hearing of the death of Nelson Mandela, I posted a link on Facebook to the South African children's hospital in his name and donated. I was completely ignored whilst my newsfeed became clogged by my middle-class friends with "RIP Nelson Mandela" and photos of Morgan Freeman. FML

OP here :) Some of you have taken this the wrong way so let me clarify - I was in NO way trying to garner 'likes' for donating to the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. I never even mentioned that I donated, I just posted the link and a little comment saying Please donate in honour of his memory. I assume no one donated because they didn't say anything and I just think it's a bit sad because even a couple of dollars goes a long way. Not many of my friends would have heard of the hospital either so I thought if I brought it to their attention they could donate and help the children in South Africa receive the care and treatment they desperately need. I believe it's a great way to honour Nelson Mandela's memory.

People in my class today were talking about how Morgan Freeman was better than Mandela anyways because his voice was cooler. People these days can be awful.

Look on the bright side OP, half of those friends (the Morgan Freeman pics) will probably serve you sandwiches at Subway 20 years from now... I actually had a friend who posted "RIP MORGAN FREEMAN" on his Facebook. I called him out on that and the next thing I know most of his friends and family are deriding him for being an insensitive idiot. There is hope.

THANK you OP! I'm not here to discuss Morgan Freeman, nor Paul Walker. They're not important for now. I just want to thank you. I'm South African and you are great by donating. x

Wow, my comment got deleted just because I wrote the truth about Mandela. It's really sad you are making a hero out of a criminal.

Repost it a few times or just take pride for doing the right thing...

I think people confuse Nelson with Morgan because Morgan played Nelson in Invictus. Having said that, as a South African I can attest that today was a sad day for the country. I saw my friends crying at work. We couldn't even bring ourselves to do anything. Nelson Mandela was a legend and the jokes are just distasteful. He did a lot for this country and world at large. He fought for out freedom. Today we walk the streets with no worries because of him. Interracial relationships aren't frowned upon thanks to him. We don't have to carry IDs anymore. I'm a working professional now because of him and others like him. He didn't change my life because I wasn't exposed to apartheid, but he definitely shaped it. It never would have started and turned out the way it did had it not been for his struggle. Rest in peace, Tata. You are loved and will be sorely missed.

I hope your lower-class friends kick your ass. Maybe that will help you get the social media attention you seek.

Some advice: gotta get some smarter friends.

I don't understand how you posting info about donating money and getting no responses is a FML. I can see the offense at the jokes, etc but how is this YOUR life? Not everyone donates money and not everyone is passionate about one person or another. You need to chill if that's the worst thing you can come up with.

Mandela's friend Muhammad Ali said, "Service to others is the rent your pay for your room on earth." OP, you did that and suggested a way for others to do it. The good people of the world are singing Mandela to his rest, with such acts and words.
