OfficeDroneWoman tells us more.
OP here. Some of you noticed it said "woman." Yes, I'm a woman. That's why her complaint made no sense. Glad to report, though, that after a couple days HR got back to me and said I was off the hook, and told her that if she makes any more accusations like that, she'll be fired. She can't even look me in the eye now.

Well seeing as she's already put in the complaint you might as well get your money's worth (so to speak) tell her that her **** are hideous and you've seen perkier ones on your 90 year old neighbour sunbathing naked..... But give her a cheeky wink just to freak the conceited bitch out afterwards.....
well she is a stupid cow
These kind of people peeve me to no end. She's possibly a serial offender who has sued others in the past, or you're her first victim and there are more to come. The annoying thing is that most of the time, these people get away with it, and the company has no choice but to fire the innocent victim. OP, if she didn't choose you, she probably would have chosen somebody else. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon crime.
it wasn't the offer of support that got you in trouble... it was the googly eyes that came with it.
Next time bring a tape recorder..,then if there is complaint you can then instate what she actually said...
I'd thumb up this vote, but tape recordings aren't considered evidence in court unless all persons involved are informed of being recorded. That's what I understand, anyway. Double-check for yourself to be sure. I know what your thinking: "He's wearing a wire!" That's for police who have a warrant. Different ballpark.
Tip: Buy a personal digital recorder that has excellent reviews at picking up dictation at range. Keep it on you at all times. Whenever talking to her or offering help to her, turn it on. You can also use this for if your boss is the kind of person that promises you that you can have certain days off then goes back saying, "I never said that." You'll have proof. I learned this from watching my father at work and I do it at any job I go to, even fast food jobs. It's great when the costumer says they ordered something and you got it wrong then you pull that out and they hear their own voice saying you got it right. Even if they complain you have them on record.
An additional tip, though: it may be illegal to record someone's voice without their knowledge. This is why you often hear "your call may be recorded for quality purposes..." when you call customer service lines. Double-check your local laws before you do something like this. Even though there's only a small chance it will be an issue, if someone you've recorded without their knowledge decides to take action and it is illegal to do so, you have no defense.
Generally the law you're referring to stands from the point of you using the recording to commit slander. There are laws and you should be wary of them though. Another thing you should know is that you may not be allowed to record ANYTHING if you are in certain states. This stems from people recording animal abuse in meat farms and what not, but the effect is statewide and stops any/all recording (video or audio). (this is a trash way for these meat farms to keep abusing the animals and breaking laws. I eat meat and am just pointing out reasons and whatnot.) Check your laws, ignorance is not an excuse. It is legal where I am because we don't put up with stupidity.
what a bloody scunt!
