Are you sure she didn't mean that she didn't know you considered the two of you EXCLUSIVE? There's a difference between not knowing you're dating someone and not knowing they consider you their GIRLFRIEND that they need to break up with before seeing someone else. Did you ever ASK her to be exclusive?
It could be that she is aromantic, but not asexual, and thought she and OP were just friends with benefits. Or just not romantically interested in OP. This sounds like a major communication failure either way, and makes it kind of unsurprising that the relationship failed. Not that it doesn't suck for OP in the emotional sense, since that is probably seriously upsetting. Of course, she could have just said that as a way to state her lack of emotional pain at the break up, but I don't know if that would be better or worse. I'm not blaming OP, or even the not-girlfriend, just... If one of you didn't even know you were dating, it sounds like the relationship wasn't the healthiest one to begin with. Especially considering that the relationship hit at least the one year anniversary, the matter of their relationship status should have come up, I would think. I mean, sure, celebrating a 'one month anniversary' is dumb, but people that are dating usually celebrate at least the yearly anniversaries, don't they? Also, calling someone your girlfriend after they stated that they didn't think you were even dating, is a bit...off. I'll pass it off as a wording choice for the sake of the post, though.
Friends with benefits and you didn't even know.
Apply cold water to burnt area...
Ouch…friend zoned HARD
Either she really thought you were just friends with benefits, or you got played son. I mean, if that were me and you tried to break up with me, I'd be like shit we were dating? LOL that was a relationship? The ultimate GFY! She wins bro.
Did you even ask her out?
Sorry but, didn't you two make out or something?
sounds like my ex... maybe they should meet

Seems like you dodged a major bullet. I wonder if you would have proposed to her, she would suggest to be married as friends.
Dating, 2016 style.
