Today, while buying paint, I began to help an elderly woman working to lift some heavy boxes. She told me what a nice young lady I was. Then her boss came over, screamed at her for being lazy and fired her. She cried. So did I. FML

That is terrible, rip her boss's purls next time.

He probably thought he was being tough, firing her and yelling at her like that. Sounds to me like he was lacking in that department anyways.

I grew up in Nova Scotia. Sadly, while you did a good thing, it is not covered under any proprietor insurance if you get hurt doing her job. Cutbacks have led to this, and people are overly paranoid! Fyl, though. He didn't need to fire her because you did a good deed. The stores don't want to pay out injuries for people who don't work for them.

Couldn't agree with you more! However, this is Nova Scotia. Completely backwards and non-sensical! The only reason that I know anything about this "rule" is because my dad helped a woman lift boxes in a zellers. The manager saw him, rushed over, and told him that he could not help people because if he got hurt, he gets squat because the injury would occur under circumstances outside of a normal customer experience. She didn't fire the employee though, and simply said that she was going to pretend that she hadn't seen it! It's ******, but them's the rules, it seems!

That's when you tell them it's ok because I am insured. Got to stop treating each other like enemies under an unsteady truce. There are bad businesses and bad customers but they are not in the majority.

i had the same thought. her ex boss is horrible. i would've kicked him in the nuts. he would never be able to have kids by the time i was done.

What a bastard that boss is. If there is anyone at the store you can talk to about this, please go. Maybe you can get the lady her job back and/or get her boss fired. What an awful thing to go through. FYL and the other lady's.

And the award for the biggest asshole of the year goes to.... the boss !

Sorry OP at least the elderly woman knows how much of a kind person you are

There are too many bad managers in business today. People who pass the buck and are better at making themselves look good than doing their job. I know of several companies that practically determine their profits based on how they control payroll. If we are ever going to get out of this recession we need to stop supporting the cult of mediocracy that runs our businesses.

The way that he fired the woman was wildly inappropriate. A manager like that should never have been in a position of leadership to begin with. He made a customer uncomfortable and if I were Op I wouldn't return to that store. He also opened the company up to liability. We complain about screwed up customers all the time, but mostly it is because we lack a decent outlet to bitch about our messed up corporate bosses. I personally almost got fired once because the changes that I made when transferring were making such an outrageous impact that my boss though it made her look bad so she secretly submitting documents to HR. Luckily that person was a friend of mine.

That is completely inappropriate of him to fire her while you were around. And the screaming? Way over the top. Not to mention a pretty awful reason to fire somebody. If I were you I would write an email or take the time to call upper management and explain the situation. Let them know how terrible it was. Who knows, maybe he'll get what's coming to him a bit faster.

My thoughts exactly. Contact upper management or the owner. Make it clear how upset you were, and how this had permanently stained your view of the company. Tell them you won't be going back and that you have told all your friends, both online and irl. Bad press travels fast these days and companies are starting to understand this. Be very blunt about how you feel on this matter. You may end up getting the old woman's job back and her manager fired. I've been a manager at many stores and while there is a liability issue with you helping, the bosses behavior was completely unacceptable. You NEVER do that in front of a customer, and this is why.

For once, **** YOLO. She's not going to live for long without a paycheck
