Today, while I was at work, my wife discovered you cannot put out a grease fire with water. I came home to a frantic spouse, a fire department bill, and a newly destroyed kitchen. FML

When do you learn that? In grade school? My best friend taught me to shake salt on the grease because salt can't burn so that is how I deal with it or of course a lid or another non flammable cover.

fire department bill WTF? isn't that what taxes are for

Our city fire department does charge every time they are called out (fire, accident, etc). There have also been 40+ arsons here in the last year on top of any regular fires or accidents they get called out to, they have to make up losses somewhere in a small town.

I did not see where it said she was making a sandwich. Regardless of what she was making, when a fire comes up and a person panicks, instinct kicks in. Automatically a person thinks of water to put out a fire. This does not mean she is stupid or dumb like a lot of you are saying. This simply means she either did not have the knowledge or experience with a grease fire or that she panicked and used her instincts, even though it was not the best for this situation. OP - I am sorry that you now have to fix your kitchen after this incident. I hope your wife is ok. That is all that really matters here. Material things can be replaced. People can not.

YDI for marrying a dumb woman. Once you get new kitchen, you should cook, or I think you'll come home to a crapload of charred dinners.

"YDI for marrying a dumb woman." I was about to write "dumb ****", but yea that works too

You deserve it, I bought my kitchen an ABC Fire extinguisher and my wife knows how to use it. Its white in colour so it doesn't stand out and look out of place. By the way, the B in ABC is for grease.

To everyone:do not jeopardize burning your hand trying to sprinkle salt, flower or baking soda on this flaming, bubbling grease... It needs an even layer to separate the flame from the oxygen & extinguish it, and that will take a lot of effort, a lot of time, and a lot of whichever product you're trying to use. Anytime you're cooking w grease or a food that produces its own grease, have a potholder and the lid to the pan next to the stove. Potholder, lid, turn off stove-do not move the pan (spills easily), do not lift lid to see if the fire's out (it will reignite w the reintroduction of oxygen)... Leave it for an hour. Or use a fire extinguisher. I have the burns and renovated kitchen to prove it.

why aren't you just happy that you're wife is still alive and that your entire house wasn't burned down with all your valuables. people are so greedy these days. fml over everything.

fire department bill?!? you have to pay to have fires put out? seriously, wtf?

If she doesn't know how to work with grease, then why the hell is she using it? FYL for having to deal with property damage, but YDI for marrying someone inept. For future reference, tell her to either keep a large pan lid around if she's ever cooking with grease and perhaps have a sizable portion of baking soda nearby as well (works well for smothering). A dry chemical extinguisher would be better, mind you, but isn't as practical since it'll contaminate any uncovered food. If it'd make you feel safer though, an ABC multi-purpose extinguisher still isn't a bad idea, since it'll work on stuff like paper and plastic (A) too.
