Today, while I was working as a waitress, I had to wait on a table of 13 people. I was struggling through it and when they finally left I went by the table to pick up my tip. Instead of a money I got a napkin saying "Here's your tip, don't be a waitress." FML

Your restaurant doesn't add gratuity for parties of 8 or more? Most do, and this is why.

If you have ever worked in the restaurant industry, you'd realize this is a FML. No one deserves to get stiffed on a tip, especially for a party of 13. But like #3, why wasn't there gratuity added in?

Maybe you did a poor job - sorry it didn't pay off.

15% is minimum if the server took your order and got you your food without causing you any anguish. If the customer isn't happy with something, they should communicate, don't pull this disgusting bullshit. I don't know what 19 is smoking, but yes, sometimes people stiff despite getting perfect service. I would know.

waiters can make $180 or more for working 6 hours...it's a job any 10 year old can do: take an order, bring food, refill drinks. Yet that derserves $30 an hour? Standard should be 5%, waiters don't deserve anymore than an employee at McDonald's making $7 an hour...

What kinda waiting jobs have YOU been looking at? Everywhere I look around here give only minimum wage. Anything extra you have to make through a tip!

you realize that waiters and waitresses make less than minimum wage due to income from tips right? they also do more work for the customer than a mcdonald's worker, as such its only right that they be tipped. 5% is almost nothing for most meals. I'd hate to have you as a customer.

If you believe your server deserves to make the same amount as someone working a fast food counter, I hope that you retrieve your own food from the kitchen, refill your own drinks, and generally keep your mouth shut. I cannot grasp the concept of people who are so incredibly cheap or so desperate to break "social norms" -- stay at home and cook for yourself.

I'd like to see you try that job before criticizing. It's not as easy as it looks. You're probably that douche who comes in and is a total jerk to anyone behind the counter/at the register.

You don't make $180 in 6 hours every single shift...also, that's not common for most servers in most restaurants. You have NO idea what it's like to be a server. Not only do you have to know the entire menu, you also have to pace the food right so everything comes out on time while doing this for multiple tables who all need stuff now because they are too impatient to wait an extra minute. Then you get the people who are too stupid to ask for what they need all at once, so you have to get one person a soda, then another person needs a soda, and then they need more bread and it just goes on and on...And through all of this, we're making $2-$3 an hour which amounts to about $10 after taxes, and that's working for over 20 hours. There is A LOT more work involved than you think, so don't criticize, and is so much harder than working at McDonald's for $7/hr.

You are an idiot. At fast food joints they make 7-8 dollars just to play cashier to a single patron at a time and possibly bag up their food... sometimes that is an entirely different person. Their job ends there. A waiter caters to several tables every need for about 45mins to an hour for about 3-4dollars an hour. If you are too cheap to pay gratuity I suggest you order your food to go and play waiter/waitress to yourself in the comfort of your own damn kitchen.

That's funny, I make 3.65 an hour, fuckhead. I'm "supposed" to make the rest in tips. When we're slow, I don't, and I do end up making minimum wage for working my ass off. Try serving, it's great.

who the **** makes $30 an hour? cause it ain't me, I make 5. I know some places that give the waitresses TWO because "the tips make up for it"

You forget that we have to deal with assholes like you. And please, I know people who get paid a ton of money to sit behind a desk and play on facebook all day. Don't tell me I don't deserve to make money. It's how I'm putting myself through college and how I make a living until I get a better job.

wow number 32, until you walk a mile in our shoes, you should shut your mouth and keep your dumb comments to yourself. the average waiter walks about 3 miles a night, deals with roughly 40-50 customers who all want their food a certain way, for much longer periods of time than any mcdonalds worker ever would. plus we refill your drinks, clean up after your kids nasty mess, listen to you complain about your steak that isnt cooked well enough ( even though it usually is cooked properly) and typically hope for a 15 percent tip, minimum. there are more assholes out there than great customers, and i guess all servers now know where you stand.

AGREED!!! I didn't work at a restaurant for too long before I figured out I was totally shitty at it and quit but I have the MOST respect for anyone in the food service industry because I know how much it sucks getting nothing on a table. Before I get flamed, I was a buser not a waitress but every waitress/waiter had to give busers (and there were 5 of us) a least a portion of their tips. I made $5/hour and then usually about $10 from whatever waitress I was working with. Not leaving a tip is pretty ****** up, unless she poured hot coffee in someone's lap or dropped food on the table. It obviously doesn't say, "Today, I had a table of 13 who didn't leave a tip probably because I was a raging bitch and spit in someone's face. FML" because I doubt that's what happened. Some people suck.

Agreed on this one...and even if she made what seems like a big mistake...some people would just overlook it if she aplogized appropriately. My brother-in-law is a waiter at an Italian restaurant and he once dropped a plate of ravioli into a customer's bag that had his birthday presents in there (which only got a tiny bit dirty) of course he apologized and they guy just chuckled and and giggled and said "I never said I wanted my food to go"...and they still gave him a tip... And sometimes it's not even the waitress's fault...I mean if the cook is being slow in the kitchen, what can she do about it other than tell him to hurry up?!

chances are you were doing a shitty job as a waitress. otherwise they would have left cash. I can only assume ydi for being a bad waitress

Any restaurant that automatically adds gratuity has to have it clearly written on the menu or mentioned when you made reservations.

Most countries you don't get a tip anyway

Thats because in most countries servers get at least minimum wage because tips aren't part of their income. I get paid 2.83 an hour. After taxes, it's rare I get a paycheck for more than 20 dollars for a week. I'd like to see you try to live on that.

Tips should be a reward for particularly good or friendly service. Not your usual brand of American false cheerfulness. if you merely do the job you have been employed for without shining somehow then you shouldn't really be expecting a tip as your right. also, 20% as standard? what the ****? that's ridiculous. My opinion is if you don't like the money without tips then get a different job.

Repeat after me: In America, a tip is not a reward. A tip is part of a living wage. Now say it about ten more times. Tips are not greedy waiters picking up $10/hr and trying to extort more out of customers. In most US states (including Arizona, where this FML is from), waiters are paid a *much lower* minimum wage with the expectation that the tips will make up for it. It varies from state to state, but this minimum wage can be 1/4-1/2 that of the general minimum wage. I think we should cut your salary/wage by 3/4 and tell you that you shouldn't expect the rest of it unless you truly shine and see how you handle that.

not my fault if you live in a country with a shitty system, or that people have shitty jobs. if the tip is not compulsary then it can't be assumed to be part of the wage. ergot, they are not being paid minimum wage. SO GET A DIFFERENT ******* JOB. I have a Masters degree in civil engineering and have got a job that uses the skills learnt in it. I think I earn my wage.

Where exactly would you like all the waiters to get this "other job?" Do not realize how shitty the economy is? There are not "other jobs," and if all the waiters got "other jobs" than who would be left to serve an idiot like you?

boatkicker 4

WHAT DIFFERENT JOB DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO GET? Take a look at hte US economy right now? See how shitty it is? See how the unemployment rate is raising? Typically those who are waitstaff can't get another job for one reason or another. You said you have a masters degree, that's all fien and good for you, but back once upon a time you DIDN'T have a masters or that job you're bragging about. What about then? Did you work your way through school doing minimun wages jobs? I'm guessing, based on teh attitude you have, that someone else was supporting you during that time, but if you did work your way through, how can you have such little respect for people who are doing those jobs? Clearly they need the money for something, be it school or rent or electricity, or whatever else. They need something that pays the bills, and this is what they have for now. There's not a lot else out there right now, unless you have a masters (lucky you) but for those of us who dont, this is what we're stuck with. Besides, i'm sure every once in a while you complain about your job too. Everyone does.
